WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (30-26) shut out the Gary SouthShore RailCats 4-0 at Shaw Park Sunday afternoon to split the four-game series between the two clubs.
The Goldeyes broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning when Reggie Pruitt Jr. came home on Eric Rivera ’s sacrifice fly to right field.
Winnipeg then added three more runs with a two-out rally in the home half of the eighth inning. First David Washington drove in Hidekel Gonzalez and Raul Navarro with a single up the middle, then Logan Hill doubled down the left field line to bring home Max Murphy.
Jhon Vargas made his first career start for the Goldeyes in an opener role and pitched two innings. He was followed by RJ Martinez (5-4), who was awarded the win in a scorer’s decision. Martinez allowed four hits in four innings of work, striking out three and walking a pair.
Bryan Blanton , Travis Seabrooke , and Tasker Strobel each contributed an inning of scoreless, hitless relief for Winnipeg.
Reliever Robbie Coursel (0-1) was charged with the loss for the RailCats (23-34). He gave up one run in one-third of an inning and did not surrender a hit.
The Goldeyes return to action at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday in Rosemont, Illinois against the league-leading Chicago Dogs. All the action can be heard locally on CJNU 93.7 FM and worldwide at cjnu.ca.
Winnipeg returns home to Shaw Park Tuesday, July 26 against the same Chicago club.
