FARGO, ND – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (9-10) won their third consecutive series Thursday, defeating the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 10-7 at Newman Outdoor Field.
First pitch was delayed by an hour and 17 minutes as the grounds crew worked to make the field playable after a significant storm moved through the area during the afternoon. The contest ended 15 minutes before Midnight.
Once the game did start, the Goldeyes wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard as right fielder Max Murphy hit a two-out double to score left fielder Keshawn Lynch to give Winnipeg a 1-0 first inning lead.
The Goldeyes then crossed the plate six times in the top of the third. First baseman Rob Emery, centre fielder Miles Simington, and catcher Kevin García all had run scoring singles, while second baseman Jake McMurray drove in a pair with a base hit. Another run came in on a fielding error with Murphy at bat.
Fargo-Moorhead (11-7) began to chip away at the Winnipeg lead in the bottom of the inning. Third baseman Nick Novak came in on a bases-loaded walk issued to first baseman Dillon Thomas, and right fielder Ismael Alcántara singled in left fielder Evan Alexander to make the score 7-2.
The RedHawks had a big inning of their own in the bottom of the fourth to pull within one of the Goldeyes. Alexander drove in centre fielder Kona Quiggle with a single before a three-run home run by Peter Brookshaw made it 7-6.
The teams exchanged runs in the eighth inning. Shortstop Andy Armstrong came home on Emery’s single to give Winnipeg a two-run advantage, but Fargo-Moorhead kept pace when Brookshaw scampered home on a wild pitch.
The Goldeyes scored two huge insurance runs in the ninth as third baseman Dayson Croes drove in McMurray and designated hitter Ryan Holgate with a single that made the score 10-7 in favour of the visitors.
Tasker Strobel (W, 1-1) was awarded the victory in a scorer’s decision as Goldeyes starter Landen Bourassa did not pitch the required five innings to qualify for the win. Strobel worked 2.2 innings and gave up only two hits while fanning three.
Justin Courtney (S, 3) struck out a pair in the ninth to preserve the win for Winnipeg.
RedHawks starter Brenden Heiss (L, 1-3) was charged with the loss after allowing seven runs – six earned – on six hits in just three innings.
The Goldeyes return home to Blue Cross Park Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. to open a three-game weekend series with the Lincoln Saltdogs. Lefty Travis Seabrooke (1-0, 0.55 ERA) is scheduled to start for Winnipeg, while right-hander Jack Parisi (0-1, 5.06 ERA) will be on the mound for Lincoln.
