Six-Run Sixth the Difference in Win Over Monarchs
KANSAS CITY, KS – The Winnipeg Goldeyes rallied to defeat the Kansas City Monarchs 6-4 at Legends Field Friday evening to even their four-game series at a game apiece.
Winnipeg (3-5) scored six times in a bizarre sixth inning to erase a four-run deficit. After third baseman Dayson Croes singled to centre field to lead off the inning, both left fielder Jake McMurray and designated hitter Max Murphy were hit by pitches to load the bases. Catcher Rob Emery then walked with the bags full, forcing in Croes to made the score 4-1 Monarchs. McMurray crossed the plate on a throwing error charged to pitcher Jake Cantleberry before the Goldeyes tied the contest on two more bases-loaded free passes issued to shortstop Ramón Bramasco and second baseman Keshawn Lynch. Finally, Croes singled up the middle for his second hit of the inning scoring first baseman Gio Brusa and right fielder Ryan Holgate and giving the visitors a 6-4 advantage.
Kansas City (4-3) jumped out to an early lead when third baseman Cameron Cannon hit a three-run home run to left field in the bottom of the first inning.
The Monarchs added a run in the fourth on a line drive single to right field off the bat of designated hitter Ross Adolph. First baseman Frankie Tostado scored on the play to make it Kansas City 4 Winnipeg 0.
Joey Matulovich (W, 1-0) earned the victory with a five inning, seven strikeout performance in which he allowed four runs – all earned – on seven hits. Justin Courtney and Tasker Strobel each threw scoreless frames before Nick Trogrlic-Iverson (S, 1) retired all six batters he faced to nail down the Goldeyes’ first save of the season.
Cantleberry (L, 0-1) worked just a third of an inning in relief of starter Yefry Ramírez, surrendering two unearned runs without giving up a hit.
Goldeyes manager Logan Watkins said after the game that, “The strength and identity of this team right now is starting pitching. It’s going to keep us there and give us a chance to win every game.” He added that, “If we find a way to get some baserunners and some key hits we have a chance to win all of these games.”
The third game of the series is scheduled for Saturday at 6:35 p.m. with right-hander Landen Bourassa (0-1, 1.50 ERA) starting for Winnipeg against Kansas City righty Jackson Goddard (0-1, 6.75 ERA). Trevor Curl will have the pregame show on CJNU 93.7 FM and cjnu.ca at 6:00. The game will also be streamed free of charge at AABaseball.TV.
