RailCats Outpace Goldeyes in Series Opener
WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (6-8) were unable to overcome an early deficit and dropped the first game of their three-game set against the Gary SouthShore RailCats (3-10), falling 5-2 on Friday night at Blue Cross Park.
The RailCats opened the scoring in the top of the third inning, when Nick Ultsch singled home Jake Allgeyer to take a 1-0 lead. Gary SouthShore added to their advantage in the fourth as Joe Suozzi crossed the plate on a double play, extending the lead to 2-0.
The Goldeyes responded in the bottom of the fifth. Keshawn Lynch reached base and later scored on a Ray-Patrick Didder fielder’s choice, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
In the sixth, Baron Radcliff drove in Suozzi with a double to left, restoring a two-run lead for the visitors. Winnipeg once again threatened in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases before Matthew Warkentin grounded out to second, scoring Ramón Bramasco to make it a 3-2 game.
However, the RailCats pulled away in the eighth. LG Castillo delivered an RBI single to plate Jarius Richards, and an infield grounder from Elvis Peralta—combined with a throwing error—allowed Radcliff to score from second, pushing the score to 5-2.
Goldeyes starter Ryder Yakel (0-1) took the loss despite a strong outing, allowing just one run on two hits with five strikeouts over three innings. Winnipeg used four arms out of the bullpen, with Tasker Strobel, Will Sierra, Marc-André Habeck, and Trevor Brigden combining to cover the remaining six frames.
Chris Erwin (1-2) earned the win for Gary SouthShore, allowing one run on six hits over 5.2 innings. Nate Alexander pitched a scoreless ninth to record his first save of the season.
The Goldeyes look to even the series on Saturday evening. Right-hander Landen Bourassa (1-1, 3.48 ERA) takes the mound for Winnipeg, while the RailCats counter with righty Peyton Long (1-1, 3.72 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CDT.
