WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (17-16) were defeated 7-0 by the Lincoln Saltdogs at Shaw Park Sunday afternoon.
Lincoln (18-14) took a 1-0 lead just three batters into the ballgame when Josh Altmann brought Randy Norris home with a sacrifice fly to right field. Justin Byrd then drove in Ryan Long with a single up the middle that made the score 2-0 in favour of the visitors.
The Saltdogs added two more runs in the second inning. First Matt Goodheart came in on JR DiSarcina’s groundout to shortstop, then Norris scored Alex Steinbach with a single to right field.
Long hit a two-run home run to left field in the top of the fifth to give Lincoln a 6-0 lead before Welington Dotel came in on Steinbach’s single to left field in the eighth to round out the scoring.
Zach Keenan (2-0) earned the win for the Saltdogs with seven scoreless innings. He allowed six hits and struck out four. Josh Lucas (1-2) gave up six runs on six hits over five innings and was charged with the loss. He struck out four and walked three.
The Goldeyes now make the long trek to Cleburne, Texas, where they will open a three-game series with the Railroaders Tuesday at 7:06 p.m. Right-hander Landen Bourassa (0-0, 1.12) is expected to start for Winnipeg, while Cleburne has not yet announced their rotation. Winnipeg returns to Shaw Park Tuesday, June 28 when they will host the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at 6:30 p.m.
