Navarro Named Batter of the Week

WINNIPEG, MB – Winnipeg Goldeyes’ infielder Raul Navarro has been named the American Association’s Batter of the Week for July 25 th -31 st .

In six games last week, the Los Llanos, Dominican Republic native was 12-for-23 (.522) with six runs scored, two doubles, one triple, one home run, and five RBI.  Entering Monday, Navarro ranks eighth in the American Association in batting average (.336), while adding 43 runs, 16 doubles, three home runs, 34 RBI, and 12 stolen bases in 60 games.  The 30-year-old infielder is also riding a career-high 21-game hitting streak, which is the longest by a Goldeyes’ player since 2012.  Navarro has hit safely in 51 of his 60 games played.

Now in his second season with the Goldeyes, Navarro batted .310 with two home runs, 45 RBI, and 20 stolen bases for the club in 2021.  Navarro originally signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks as an international free agent in 2009, and reached the Triple-A level in 2015.  Navarro was the independent Pacific Association’s Most Valuable Player in 2019 after hitting .373 with 66 runs scored and 31 stolen bases in 62 games for the San Rafael Pacifics.

Navarro joins Luis Ramirez (Pitcher of the Week May 30 th -June 5 th and Pitcher of the Month for June) as Goldeyes who have taken home league honours this season.

WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (11-13) bounced back in a big way Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Kane County Cougars (10-13) by a score of 7–2 at Blue Cross Park. Boxscore Winnipeg opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run from first baseman Matthew Warkentin — a towering blast that nearly struck the video board in right-centre field. Kane County tied things up in the top of the third on a home run by Todd Lott, but the Goldeyes quickly responded. Right fielder Tanner O’Tremba put Winnipeg back in front with an RBI single in the bottom half of the frame. Warkentin added to his productive afternoon in the fifth, driving in Max Murphy with a base hit. Later in the inning, Warkentin stole second, and the throw allowed O’Tremba to score from third, extending the lead to 4–1. The Cougars cut into the lead in the top of the seventh with a solo home run from Robby Martin Jr., but Winnipeg answered in the bottom of the eighth. Third baseman Ramón Bramasco crushed a three-run homer — his third of the season — to left field, bringing home Keshawn Lynch and Kevin García to make it a 7–2 ballgame. Right-hander Jesse Galindo (1-1) picked up the win, working five innings and allowing just one run on four hits while striking out four. The Goldeyes bullpen combined for four innings of one-run ball, with strong outings from Ryder Yakel and Trevor Brigden . Westin Muir (2-2) took the loss for Kane County after allowing four earned runs over five innings. The series wraps up Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. CDT. WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (10–13) were shut out 5–0 by the Kane County Cougars (10–12) Tuesday evening at Blue Cross Park, dropping the opening game of the three-game series. Boxscore Kane County opened the scoring in the fourth inning on a wild pitch by Winnipeg starter Luke Boyd that brought Armond Upshaw home. Despite the run, Boyd (L, 0–2) turned in a quality start in his home debut, allowing just one hit and one earned run over six innings, walking two and striking out five. The Cougars padded their lead in the eighth. After Nilo Rijo crossed the plate on a single from Trendon Craig, Josh Allen followed with a two-run single to give the visitors a 4–0 advantage. Craig added his second RBI single of the night in the ninth to make it 5–0. Winnipeg's bullpen faltered late. Derrick Cherry held the line with a scoreless seventh, but Tasker Strobel surrendered three unearned runs in the eighth, and Will Sierra gave up another run in the ninth on three walks and a hit. Ben Onyshko struck out the only batter he faced to end the eighth. Kane County starter Chris Mazza (L, 1–2) silenced the Goldeyes’ bats, tossing six scoreless innings while giving up just three hits, walking one, and striking out six. Boxscore With two out in the top of the ninth inning, O’Tremba lined a single to centre field that brought Ray-Patrick Didder in from third base and broke a 3-3 tie. Trevor Brigden (W, 1-2) pitched around a one-out ground rule double down the left field line by Ray Zuberer III clinch the win for Winnipeg. For the third consecutive game, Lake Country opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Daunte Stuart came home on Luke Roskam’s sacrifice fly to centre. Luis Avilés Jr. hit a solo home run to left-centre field in the home half of the third to increase the DockHounds’ lead to 2-0 before the Goldeyes stormed back with three runs in the fifth inning to take the lead. Max Murphy continued to swing a hot bat, with a two-run double off the wall in right-centre that scored Kevin García and Didder to tie the contest at 2-2. Then Gustavo Sosa hit Winnipeg’s second three-bagger of the ballgame to plate Murphy for a 3-2 Goldeyes lead. Lake Country tied the game in the seventh inning when Ryan Hernández singled through the left side of the infield to bring Zuberer in to score. Mitchell Lambson started for Winnipeg and went five innings, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out six and walking one. Will Sierra , Ryder Yakel , and Brigden covered the final four frames out of the bullpen for the Goldeyes. DockHounds starter Jacob Nix also worked five innings, surrendering three runs on seven hits and fanning eight. Eric Torres (L, 1-1), the fourth Lake Country reliever of the day, gave up the deciding run on two hits in his only inning of action. OCONOMOWOC, WI – Max Murphy launched a decisive grand slam to dead centre field in the fifth inning, propelling the Winnipeg Goldeyes (9–12) to a 7–2 win over the Lake Country DockHounds (11–8) Saturday evening at Wisconsin Brewing Company Park, snapping Winnipeg’s three-game losing skid. Boxscore Lake Country opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on a solo home run by Ray Zuberer III. The Goldeyes responded in the third when Ramón Bramasco singled in Evan Alexander to tie the game at 1–1. The turning point came in the top of the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, Jake Guenther drew a walk to push Winnipeg ahead 2–1. Just three pitches later, Murphy crushed a grand slam to centre, giving the Goldeyes a commanding 6–1 lead. It was Murphy’s team-leading fourth home run of the season. The DockHounds added a run in the seventh on a single by Brian Rey, but Jacob Robson answered with a solo shot in the eighth to restore Winnipeg’s five-run advantage. Zan Rose (W, 1–0) earned the win in his professional debut. In a quality start, he tossed six innings, allowing just one run on four hits, walking two, and striking out three. Luke Hansel (L, 2–1) took the loss, surrendering five earned runs on five hits over 4.2 innings, with four walks and three strikeouts. The Goldeyes’ bullpen trio of Tasker Strobel , Ryder Yakel , and Ben Onyshko combined for three innings of relief, giving up just one run while striking out six. OCONOMOWOC, WI – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (8-12) were held to one run for the second consecutive game, falling 5-1 to the Lake Country DockHounds (11-7) Friday evening at Wisconsin Brewing Company Park. Boxscore Lake Country took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly to centre field by Ryan Hernandez that scored Daunte Stuart. The Goldeyes tied the game in the top of the fifth when Jacob Robson lined a base hit to centre field, bringing Max Murphy home. However, the DockHounds responded immediately in the bottom half. Stuart drove in Eddy Pelc with a double before Ray Zuberer III hit a two-run home run to right field, giving the DockHounds a 4-1 advantage. A 30-minute rain delay paused play in the middle of the sixth, but the DockHounds added to their lead in the seventh inning with a solo home run to centre by Aaron Hill. Goldeyes starter Landen Bourassa (L, 2-2) was charged with the loss, allowing four earned runs on six hits over five innings. He walked two and struck out one. DockHounds starter Chris Jefferson took a no-decision after allowing one run on eight hits over 4.2 innings with four walks and four strikeouts. JT Moeller (W, 2-0) picked up the win in relief, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Trey Riley and Jake Cantleberry combined to cover the final three innings, allowing just one hit and one walk. Derrick Cherry provided a solid relief effort for Winnipeg, working the final three innings and allowing one run on one hit while striking out one. The series continues Saturday at 5:35 p.m. CDT. Boxscore The Goldeyes (8-11) thought they had won the game when left fielder Evan Alexander charged in to make a play on Robbie Martin Jr.’s shallow fly ball with two out in the bottom of the tenth, however the ball popped out of Alexander’s glove. One pitch later Todd Lott – the top hitter in the American Association – doubled to left-centre field to drive in Trendon Craig and Martin to win the ballgame. After the first nine innings of the contest were scoreless, Winnipeg finally broke through in the top half of the extra frame when courtesy runner Tanner O’Tremba came home on a throwing error by Cougars catcher Nick Dalesandro. The closest either team came to putting a run on the board in the early going came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Armond Upshaw walked and tried to score from first base on Claudio Finol’s double to right field. However right fielder Max Murphy and second baseman Ray-Patrick Didder combined to get the ball to catcher Gustavo Sosa in time to cut Upshaw down at the plate. Goldeyes starter Jesse Galindo scattered six hits over six innings of work. He struck out four and walked three. Tasker Strobel , Ryder Yakel , and Trevor Brigden (L, 0-2) came out of the bullpen for Winnipeg. Konnor Ash started for Kane County and pitched seven innings, allowing six hits and striking out seven. He did not walk a batter in an outing that saw his earned run average drop to 1.20 on the season. Three relievers held the Goldeyes hitless over the final three innings, including lefty Jordan Martinson (W, 1-0). Murphy went three-for-three at the plate, increasing his team-leading batting average to .338. The Goldeyes took the first game 3-2, but dropped the second contest 8-5. Boxscore – Game One Boxscore – Game Two In the first game, the Goldeyes opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning when Jake Guenther delivered a two-run single, bringing home Max Murphy and Jacob Robson to give Winnipeg a 2-0 lead. Kane County quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning. Nick Dalesandro tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run single of his own, scoring Trendon Craig and Armond Upshaw. In the top of the seventh, Ramón Bramasco came through with a clutch go-ahead RBI single that scored Andy Armstrong , giving the Goldeyes a 3-2 lead that they would hold for the win. Starting pitcher Mitchell Lambson (W, 3-0) continued to impress early in the season. He threw six innings, allowing just two runs on four hits. He also walked three batters and struck out four in a quality start. Kane County’s starter Chris Mazza also turned in a quality start, pitching six innings and giving up only three hits and two unearned runs. He walked two and struck out three but did not factor into the decision. Ryder Yakel (S, 1) earned his first save of the year, closing out the game with a perfect seventh inning that included one strikeout. Tyler Beardsley (L, 0-2) took the loss for Kane County after giving up the go-ahead run on a hit and an unearned run in his lone inning of work. Winnipeg once again struck first in game two, this time in the top of the second inning. With Evan Alexander on third base, Cougars starter Tommy Sommer was called for a balk, allowing Alexander to score and give the Goldeyes a 1-0 lead. The Goldeyes added to their lead in the third inning. Armstrong hit an RBI single to score Gustavo Sosa from second base. Shortly after, Murphy tripled into the right-centre field gap, bringing Armstrong home and making it a 3-0 game in favour of Winnipeg. However, Kane County answered back with seven consecutive runs, beginning in the bottom of the third inning. Galli Cribbs Jr. scored from first base on a base hit to right field. The play was aided by a throwing error from Goldeyes right fielder Tanner O’Tremba , allowing Cribbs to score and trim the lead to 3-1. The Cougars then erupted for four runs in the fourth inning. Thomas Jones hit a two-run double that brought in Josh Allen and Oscar Santos to tie the game at 3-3. Claudio Finol followed with an infield single that scored Jones, giving Kane County the lead. Cribbs added to the damage with a double into right field that brought Finol home and extended the Cougars’ lead to 5-3. In the fifth inning, Kane County padded their lead with two more runs. Allen ripped an RBI single to score Todd Lott, and Santos crossed the plate on a passed ball, making it 7-3. Winnipeg attempted a comeback in the sixth. Armstrong came through again with another RBI single, scoring Matthew Warkentin and O’Tremba to cut the deficit to 7-5. Kane County responded once more in the bottom of the sixth, when Trendon Craig drove in Cribbs with a single, pushing the final score to 8-5 in favour of the Cougars. Luke Boyd (L, 0-1), signed earlier Wednesday by the Goldeyes, made his debut for Winnipeg and was tagged with the loss. The right-hander threw 3.1 innings, allowing five runs—four of which were earned—on seven hits. He also walked two and struck out two. Ben Onyshko entered out of the bullpen and worked two-thirds of an inning, striking out one. Derrick Cherry pitched one inning and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out one. Will Sierra threw the final inning, surrendering one run on two hits and issuing a walk. Sommer started for the Cougars and pitched 3.2 innings. He gave up three runs on six hits while striking out four batters. Vin Timpanelli (W, 1-2) was credited with the win for Kane County. He pitched 1.1 innings, allowing one run on one hit and issuing a walk. Jordan Martinson struck out the only batter he faced. Jake Gozzo followed with two-thirds of an inning, giving up one run on three hits. Jake Stevenson (S, 1) closed out the game in the seventh, earning his first save of the season. WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (7-9) saw their two-series win streak snapped with a 7-3 loss to the Gary SouthShore RailCats (4-11) Sunday afternoon at Blue Cross Park. Boxscore The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning, when Gary’s Jairus Richards broke through with an RBI single. Elvis Peralta followed with a two-run double, giving the RailCats a 3-0 lead. They added another run in the seventh before the Goldeyes responded in the bottom half. Andy Armstrong ’s RBI double and Jake Guenther’s first home run of the season—a two-run shot—cut the deficit to 4-3. However, Gary answered quickly. Peralta delivered again with a second two-run double in the eighth, and Olivier Basabe added an RBI single to cap the scoring at 7-3. Goldeyes starter Tasker Strobel pitched five scoreless innings in a no-decision. Derrick Cherry (L, 1-1) took the loss in relief, allowing three runs in two-thirds of an inning. Spencer Adams (W, 1-1) earned the win for the RailCats, allowing three runs over 6.2 innings with six strikeouts. Boxscore The Goldeyes jumped ahead early, scoring in the bottom of the first when Ramón Bramasco crossed the plate on a double play ground ball from Matthew Warkentin . The RailCats answered back in the third inning, taking a 2-1 lead on a fielder’s choice by Joe Suozzi and a run-scoring single to left from Baron Radcliff. Winnipeg responded quickly in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Jacob Robson came through with a clutch base hit to score Tanner O’Tremba and tie the game. An inning later, Max Murphy delivered what would turn out to be the game-winning hit, singling to left to drive in Andy Armstrong and give the Goldeyes a 3-2 advantage. Right-hander Landen Bourassa (W, 2-1) was superb, notching his second consecutive quality start. He tossed seven innings, allowing just two runs while striking out six. The bullpen did the rest. WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (6-8) were unable to overcome an early deficit and dropped the first game of their three-game set against the Gary SouthShore RailCats (3-10), falling 5-2 on Friday night at Blue Cross Park. Gary SouthShore added to their advantage in the fourth as Joe Suozzi crossed the plate on a double play, extending the lead to 2-0. The Goldeyes responded in the bottom of the fifth. Keshawn Lynch reached base and later scored on a Ray-Patrick Didder fielder’s choice, cutting the deficit to 2-1. In the sixth, Baron Radcliff drove in Suozzi with a double to left, restoring a two-run lead for the visitors. Winnipeg once again threatened in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases before Matthew Warkentin grounded out to second, scoring Ramón Bramasco to make it a 3-2 game. However, the RailCats pulled away in the eighth. LG Castillo delivered an RBI single to plate Jarius Richards, and an infield grounder from Elvis Peralta—combined with a throwing error—allowed Radcliff to score from second, pushing the score to 5-2. Goldeyes starter Ryder Yakel (0-1) took the loss despite a strong outing, allowing just one run on two hits with five strikeouts over three innings. Winnipeg used four arms out of the bullpen, with Tasker Strobel , Will Sierra , Marc-André Habeck , and Trevor Brigden combining to cover the remaining six frames. Chris Erwin (1-2) earned the win for Gary SouthShore, allowing one run on six hits over 5.2 innings. Nate Alexander pitched a scoreless ninth to record his first save of the season. The Goldeyes look to even the series on Saturday evening. Right-hander Landen Bourassa (1-1, 3.48 ERA) takes the mound for Winnipeg, while the RailCats counter with righty Peyton Long (1-1, 3.72 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CDT.
