Goldeyes Blast Six Home Runs to Take Series (Highlights)

WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (28-24) beat the Sioux City Explorers 12-3 at Shaw Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Explorers (21-30) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Tyler Rando scored on a two-out wild pitch.

After Goldeyes’ starter Luis Ramirez worked out of a first and second, no-out jam in the top of the second, the Goldeyes rallied for nine runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.  David Washington led off with an opposite-field home run to left that tied the game.  Logan Hill followed with a towering opposite-field homer to right-centre that put Winnipeg in front 2-1.  Kevin Lachance singled up the middle and advanced to second on a passed ball.  After Deon Stafford Jr. reached on an error by third baseman Blake Tiberi, Hidekel Gonzalez beat out a potential groundball double play that moved Lachance to third.  Justin Thompson grounded a single up the middle that scored Lachance with the Goldeyes’ third run.

Winnipeg made it 4-1 in the second when Reggie Pruitt Jr. doubled to right-centre to drive in Gonzalez.  Ian Sagdal followed with a single to left that plated Thompson and Pruitt.  After Max Murphy singled home Sagdal to make it 7-1, Washington blasted his second homer of the inning, a two-run shot to right that capped the nine-run frame.  The Goldeyes sent 14 batters to the plate during the rally.

Sioux City sliced the Goldeyes’ lead to 9-2 in the top of the third on back-to-back doubles from Trey Martin and Tiberi before Ramirez retired 10 consecutive batters and 15 of the final 16 he faced.

Murphy led off the bottom of the fourth with a line drive home run to left that pushed the Goldeyes’ lead to 10-2.

Thompson opened the home fifth with a long home run to right-centre.  It was Thompson’s first career professional home run.

The Explorers tallied a run in the top of the eighth on an RBI single from Danry Vasquez before the Goldeyes responded in the bottom of the inning on a solo shot to right from Murphy.

Ramirez (6-2) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on eight hits in seven innings.  Ramirez walked none and struck out four.

Explorers’ starter Zach Hedges took the loss, allowing nine runs, eight earned, on nine hits in two innings.  Hedges walked one and struck out two.

The Goldeyes’ six home runs and 15 base hits in the game both marked season-highs.  Sagdal has hit safely in 10 consecutive games.

The Goldeyes are off the next three days for the American Association All-Star Break.  Catcher Deon Stafford Jr. and left-handed pitcher Tasker Strobel will represent the Goldeyes at the American Association All-Star Game on Tuesday night at Chicago’s Impact Field.

The Goldeyes return to action Thursday, July 14 th when they host the Gary SouthShore RailCats at Shaw Park.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (11-13) split a doubleheader with the Cleburne Railroaders Wednesday evening at Blue Cross Park, dropping the opener 8-5 and taking the nightcap 2-1. Boxscore – Game One Boxscore – Game Two In game one, Cleburne (9-15) opened the scoring in the second inning when second baseman Brantley Bell lined a single to right that drove in designated hitter Carter Aldrete. The Goldeyes responded with four runs in the third. Right fielder Max Murphy drove a two-out, bases-clearing double to centre field that scored catcher Raphaël Pelletier , first baseman Kevin García , and designated hitter Jiandido Tromp . One batter later, second baseman Keshawn Lynch made it 4-1 Winnipeg with a double to left that brought in Murphy. Bell notched his second run batted in of the game in the top of the fourth when he singled up the middle to bring in first baseman Frankie Tostado. In the same inning, a bases-loaded walk to catcher Ángel Mendoza forced in shortstop Cole Foster to cut the Goldeyes’ lead to 4-3. In the fifth inning, Foster tied the game with a single to left that scored centre fielder Delino DeShields, before third baseman Caleb McNeely hit a two-out grand slam home run to left that gave the Railroaders an 8-4 lead. Winnipeg was able to get one run back in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to left off the bat of left fielder Roby Enríquez . Lynch scored on the play to trim Cleburne’s lead to 8-5. The Goldeyes threatened in the seventh, bringing the tying run to the plate with nobody out, but former Winnipeg reliever Ryder Yakel (S, 2) was able to end the threat. Luke Short (W, 1-4) went five innings for the Railroaders, allowing four runs on five hits. He struck out three and walked two. Arij Fransen (L, 0-2) started for the Goldeyes. He worked 4 and 2/3 innings, giving up six runs – five earned – on four hits while fanning a pair and walking three. Eli Saul , Willian Suárez , and Weston Lombard appeared in relief for Winnipeg. The second game got underway at 9:30 p.m. and the first two innings were scoreless. The Goldeyes took a 2-0 lead in the third when third baseman Ramón Bramasco lined a base hit to centre that scored first baseman T.J. Schofield-Sam and catcher García. There was no further scoring until the top of the seventh inning. Cleburne right fielder Cody Thomas singled to centre field to drive in left fielder Mallex Smith. With Thomas at first base representing the tying run and the clock nearing midnight, Aldrete grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the ballgame. Dominic Hambley (W, 1-1) was awarded the victory in a scorer’s decision. He allowed one hit in 1 and 1/3 innings, striking out two and walking three. Tasker Strobel started for Winnipeg and worked three innings, giving up four hits and fanning a pair. Quinn Waterhouse and Derrick Cherry (S, 5) also made appearances out of the bullpen. WINNIPEG, MB – Tuesday’s American Association game between the Winnipeg Goldeyes and Cleburne Railroaders at Blue Cross Park has been postponed due to rain. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader (two seven-inning games) on Wednesday, June 10, with game one getting underway at 5:30 p.m. The nightcap will follow the completion of the first game by approximately 30 minutes. WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (10-12) avoided a series sweep with a 4-3 victory over the Sioux City Explorers at Blue Cross Park Sunday afternoon. Boxscore After the first three innings were scoreless, Winnipeg took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when right fielder Max Murphy reached on a fielding error with two out, allowing centre fielder Noah Marcelo to come home. The Goldeyes added two more in the fifth. Shortstop Ray-Patrick Didder tripled to centre field, driving in first baseman Roby Enríquez . Didder then scored on catcher Kevin García ’s sacrifice fly to centre, making it 3-0. In the sixth, Murphy blooped a single to right field that brought second baseman Keshawn Lynch in, giving Winnipeg a four-run cushion. Sioux City (10-13) first baseman Alberto Osuna led off the seventh inning with a home run to left, and shortstop Elliot Good later singled home designated hitter Zane Denton to cut the Goldeyes’ lead to 4-2. In the top of the ninth, Good crossed the plate on centre fielder Austin Davis’ ground out to third base as the Explorers pulled to within one, with the tying run at second base and two out. However, the next batter, third baseman Zac Vooletich, lined out to end the ballgame. Mitchell Lambson (W, 2-3) went 6 and 2/3 innings for the Goldeyes, allowing two runs on seven hits. The Victoria, British Columbia native appeared in six games with Kansas City this season, posting an 0-1 record with a 6.75 earned run average. The 23-year-old was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 18th round of the 2021 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft out of Belmont High School in Victoria. The Explorers scored five times in the third inning to take a 5-1 lead. Third baseman Zac Vooletich doubled to right field to bring in shortstop Elliot Good and centre fielder Austin Davis. Then, designated hitter Zane Denton hit a sacrifice fly to centre that plated Vooletich. Finally, second baseman Van De Brake homered to left field with first baseman Alberto Osuna aboard. Sioux City would add three more in the fourth to make it 8-1. Davis lined a base hit to left field that brought right fielder Jackson Mayo and Good home, and left fielder Henry George came in on a sequence that eventually led to the Goldeyes turning a double play. The visitors’ final two runs came in the sixth inning when Vooletich doubled to left scoring Davis. Vooletich then crossed the plate on Denton’s ground out to shortstop. Boxscore Catcher Raphaël Pelletier opened the scoring for Winnipeg in the second inning with a single to right that drove in second baseman Keshawn Lynch . Sioux Falls (12-8) quickly tied the game in the top of the third when third baseman Chris Kwitzer scored on designated hitter Anthony Hall’s double-play ball. The Canaries took a 2-1 lead moments later on a single to centre by left fielder Anthony Sharkas that drove in catcher Scott Combs. The Goldeyes put four runs on the board in the fourth to move in front 5-2. First baseman T.J. Schofield-Sam hit a sacrifice fly to centre to bring in left fielder Roby Enríquez and tie the game. Centre fielder Noah Marcelo followed with a base hit to left that scored Lynch. Finally, third baseman Ramón Bramasco hit a sky-high pop-up to shallow right that Canaries second baseman Trevor Achenbach lost in the sun. Shortstop Ray-Patrick Didder and Marcelo came home on what was scored as a double. The visitors got one back in the top of the fifth when centre fielder Joe Vos drove in right fielder Josh Rehwaldt with a bloop single to left, cutting Winnipeg’s lead to 5-3. Pelletier notched his second run batted in of the evening in the fifth when he brought right fielder Max Murphy home with a sacrifice fly to left, making it 6-3 Goldeyes. Enríquez then scored on Schofield-Sam’s fielder’s choice to increase the lead to 7-3. Winnipeg put up another four-spot in the bottom of the sixth. Enríquez drew a bases-loaded walk that forced in Bramasco before Didder hit a two-out, bases-clearing triple that drove in designated hitter Jiandido Tromp , Murphy, and Enríquez, stretching the lead to 11-3. Schofield-Sam finished the scoring in the bottom of the eighth with a three-run blast to right-centre field with Lynch and Pelletier aboard, making it 14-3. Luke Boyd (W, 3-1) started for the Goldeyes and went six innings. He allowed three runs on six hits, struck out four, and walked four. Ryo Kohigashi , newly signed Jack Seward , and Derrick Cherry each worked an inning of hitless relief. Christian Edwards (L, 1-1) was charged with seven runs – all earned – on seven hits over four innings for the Canaries. He struck out four and walked four. Offensively for Winnipeg, Schofield-Sam drove in five runs, Enríquez had a pair of hits and scored three times, Marcelo and Bramasco had two hits apiece, and Lynch finished the evening with three hits, including two doubles, and scored three times. Seward, a New Westminster, British Columbia native, was acquired earlier Thursday from the Welland Jackfish of the Canadian Baseball League in exchange for future considerations. The 24-year-old made his professional debut last season with the Québec Capitales of the Frontier League. Boxscore Sioux Falls second baseman Trevor Achenbach opened the scoring in the top of the second inning with a two-out, two-run home run to left field – his second in as many games. Winnipeg (8-10) evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the same inning when left fielder Jiandido Tromp belted his third long ball of the season to left with right fielder Max Murphy aboard. The Canaries regained the lead in the third when designated hitter Anthony Hall led off the inning with a home run to right field. They increased that advantage in the fifth with a pair of runs that made the score 5-2. First, centre fielder Joe Vos came home as the result of a throwing error. Then, right fielder Josh Rehwaldt drove in Hall with a base hit to centre. Sioux Falls added two more in the top of the seventh on RBI singles by left fielder Anthony Sharkas and Rehwaldt that made the score 7-2. The Canaries further extended their lead in the ninth inning. WINNIPEG, MB – The Sioux Falls Canaries (11-7) defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 9-8 in a rain-shortened contest at Blue Cross Park Tuesday evening. The game was called after a 30-minute rain delay as the Canaries were about to bat in the top of the seventh inning. Boxscore Winnipeg (8-9) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly to left field by first baseman Roby Enríquez that brought in centre fielder Noah Marcelo . Sioux Falls went ahead 2-1 in the top of the second on a two-out, two-run home run to left off the bat of second baseman Trevor Achenbach and would extend their lead to 3-1 in the third when first baseman Mike Hart singled to right field to drive in left fielder Anthony Sharkas. The Goldeyes tied the game in the bottom of the third on a two-run home run to left by Marcelo – his sixth of the season. In the bottom of the fourth inning, second baseman Adam Hall doubled, stole third base, and scored on a throwing error to give Winnipeg a 4-3 lead. The Canaries erupted for five runs in the top of the fifth. First, Hart brought in right fielder Anthony Hall and Sharkas with a single to left field that made it 5-4 Sioux Falls. Then shortstop Michael Curialle hit a three-run home run to centre field to make it an 8-4 ballgame. Sioux Falls added another in the sixth on a base hit to right field by Sharkas that plated centre fielder Joe Vos. The Goldeyes nearly tied the game in the bottom of the sixth as the rain increased in intensity. Left fielder Jiandido Tromp singled home third baseman Ramón Bramasco before designated hitter T.J. Schofield-Sam doubled off the wall in left field to bring in right fielder Max Murphy and second baseman Keshawn Lynch to make it 9-7. Catcher Raphaël Pelletier then delivered a bloop single to shallow left that drove in Tromp that made the score 9-8 Canaries with the tying run at third base. WINNIPEG, MB – Down three runs after two innings, the Winnipeg Goldeyes (8-8) came back to defeat the Sioux Falls Canaries 6-3 at Blue Cross Park Monday evening. Boxscore Sioux Falls (10-7) took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning when designated hitter Jabari Henry lined a two-out single to centre field that brought in left fielder Anthony Sharkas. The Canaries added two more in the top of the second. First, shortstop Michael Curialle came home on a base hit by third baseman Chris Kwitzer, then Sharkas hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored second baseman Trevor Achenbach to make it 3-0 Sioux Falls. Sioux Falls nearly made it 5-0 in the third but for a defensive gem by Goldeyes left fielder Adam Hall who brought what appeared to be a two-run home run by Achenbach back into the ballpark for the third out of the frame. Winnipeg reduced the deficit to two in the bottom of the fifth on first baseman T.J. Schofield-Sam ’s double down the right field line that drove in Hall to make it 3-1. An inning later, the Goldeyes pulled to within one when centre fielder Noah Marcelo scored on right fielder Roby Enríquez ’s ground out to shortstop. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Winnipeg tied the game at 3-3 on a sacrifice fly to centre by second baseman Keshawn Lynch that brought Hall in to score. Two batters later, Marcelo crushed a two-out, three-run home run to left field with shortstop Ray-Patrick Didder and catcher Kevin García aboard. It was Marcelo’s team-leading fifth round-tripper of the season and it gave the Goldeyes a 6-3 lead. Landen Bourassa started for Winnipeg and gave up three runs on six hits in five innings of work. He struck out two and walked a pair. Weston Lombard (W, 1-0) did not allow a hit in two innings of relief. Eli Saul and Derrick Cherry (S, 3) pitched a scoreless inning each. Derek Craft went six innings for the Canaries, allowing two runs on five hits while walking a batter and fanning one. ROSEMONT, IL – The Chicago Dogs (7-8) used a seven-run seventh inning to break open a tied game and defeat the Winnipeg Goldeyes 14-7 at Impact Field Sunday afternoon. Boxscore Chicago opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when left fielder Jacob Maiben grounded into a double play, allowing designated hitter Tyreque Reed to score. Winnipeg (7-8) moved in front 2-1 in the third on a two-run home run into the right-field bleachers by shortstop Ramón Bramasco . The lead was short-lived, however, as Dogs first baseman Chance Sisco singled to centre in the bottom half to score centre fielder Giovanni DiGiacomo and tie the game. The Goldeyes scored three times in the fourth. Catcher Raphaël Pelletier singled to right to bring home second baseman Adam Hall and left fielder Jiandido Tromp , before designated hitter Ray-Patrick Didder scored on centre fielder Noah Marcelo ’s sacrifice fly to make it 5-2. Chicago answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Catcher Jaxx Groshans hit a solo home run to left, and shortstop Ethan Wilder followed with a two-run single that scored Jacob Maiben and third baseman Derek Maiben to tie the game 5-5. Winnipeg went ahead again in the fifth when Hall singled to centre to plate right fielder Max Murphy , but the Dogs responded with two runs in their half of the inning. Derek Maiben singled home second baseman Daniel Harris to tie it, and DiGiacomo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in Jacob Maiben and give Chicago a 7-6 lead. The Goldeyes drew even for the final time in the sixth when first baseman Roby Enríquez singled to left-centre, scoring Bramasco. All seven of Chicago’s seventh-inning runs came with two out. Wilder and Reed each delivered two-run singles before Groshans hit his second home run of the afternoon, a three-run shot to left. Rayne Supple (W, 1-0), Chicago’s third pitcher of the day, worked the seventh and eighth innings, allowing two hits and striking out three. Kevin Vaupel started for Winnipeg and went 4.2 innings, allowing seven runs, all earned, on 10 hits. He struck out four and walked two.
