Goldeyes Swept in Sioux City
SIOUX CITY, IA – The Sioux City Explorers (24-25) took both games of a doubleheader from the Winnipeg Goldeyes (19-30) at Lewis & Clark Park Wednesday evening. Sioux City took the opener 3-2 and shut out the Goldeyes 5-0 in the nightcap.
In game one, Sioux City took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when designated hitter Wilfredo Gimenez came home on second baseman Delvin Zinn’s groundout to shortstop.
The Goldeyes took the lead in their next at-bat on a two-run double off the right field wall by right fielder Max Murphy. Second baseman Keith Torres and centre fielder Tra Holmes scored on the play and Winnipeg led 2-1.
The Explorers tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning as right fielder Jake Sanford drove in Gimenez with a groundout to first base, then took the lead for good in the sixth with a single to left-centre field that plated pinch runner Jack Kelly to make it 3-2.
Austin Drury (1-2) picked up the win, allowing two runs on four hits over 6 1/3 innings. He struck out five and walked three. Sean Rackoski (8) earned the save, striking out both batters he faced.
Goldeyes starter Landen Bourassa (3-4) pitched a complete game, giving up three runs on seven hits. The Lethbridge native struck out three and walked two.
Winnipeg’s Joey Matulovich struck out the first seven batters he faced in the second game, but a third inning triple by Sioux City centre fielder Chase Harris brought in Sanford and gave the Explorers a 1-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the fourth, left fielder Vince Fernandez led off the frame with a home run to right-centre field to make the score 2-0.
Sioux City’s lead remained at just two until Zinn’s three-run home run to left field with two out in the bottom of the sixth made it Explorers 5 Goldeyes 0.
Solomon Bates (6-4) threw a complete game, two-hit shutout for Sioux City, striking out eight and walking just one batter.
Matulovich (1-5) surrendered just two runs on five hits in five innings of work in a hard-luck loss. He equaled a career-high with 10 strikeouts and walked only one.
The Goldeyes return home to face the Milwaukee Milkmen at Shaw Park Friday at 6:30 p.m. Winnipeg will send lefty Travis Seabrooke (4-1, 3.66 ERA) to the mound while Milwaukee counters with right-hander Ryan Zimmerman (3-1, 3.50 ERA).
