WINNIPEG, MB – Kansas City Monarchs (18-9) catcher Chris Herrmann (9) belted a grand slam in the fifth inning leading his club to a victory and three-game sweep over the Winnipeg Goldeyes (11-16) 7-0 on Sunday at Shaw Park. He has each of the Monarchs' grand slams this season.
Box Score
Kansas City was up 2-0 going to the fifth when Winnipeg pitcher
James Varela was summoned to make his Goldeyes debut. Varela walked the first three hitters, and then with one out, it was Herrmann who hit the first pitch well over the right field wall making it 6-0.
The other Monarchs runs were an RBI single by right fielder Micker Adolfo in the second inning, a double by designated hitter Gavin Collins in the fourth, and a solo homer by left fielder Dylan Rosa (4) in the ninth.
Winnipeg was shutout for the third time this season and the first time at home. Kansas City has won nine straight games at Shaw Park going back to last year.
The Goldeyes only twice had two runners on at the same time. The lone offensive highlight for Winnipeg was third baseman
Dayson Croes extending his hitting streak to 24 games with a single off the right field wall in the fifth. That was his 40th hit during the streak. Over the 24 games he's 40-96, .417. Center fielder
Brynn Martinez
despite going 0-3 walked which extends his streak of reaching base safely to 16 games.
Monarchs starter Jalen Miller (4-1) pitched seven innings for the win. He walked two and allowed three hits while striking out five. In his last three starts he's accumulated 17 straight scoreless innings.
Goldeyes starter
Marc-André Habeck (0-1) worked a personal season high four innings. He gave up four hits, two runs (both earned), he walked one, and struck out two in defeat.
Winnipeg finishes the homestand 3-3 and have now played four straight series where there's been a sweep one way or another, unfortunately for the Goldeyes only one has been in their favor.
The Goldeyes are off on Monday before starting a six-game road trip. The first stop is at Sioux Falls for three games starting on Tuesday night at 6:35. Winnipeg has yet to announce its probable. Meanwhile for Sioux Falls it'll be right-hander Chris Hardin (0-1).
