WINNIPEG, MB – The American Association announced Monday that Winnipeg Goldeyes infielder Dayson Croes and catcher Rob Emery were chosen as starters for the West Division squad at the league’s upcoming All-Star Game. Pitchers Joey Matulovich and Travis Seabrooke were also selected as members of the West Division pitching staff.
Croes already has two All-Star Game selections in both of his first two seasons professionally with the Goldeyes. The Noord, Aruba native ranks among the league leaders in batting average at .329 and base hits (68). The league’s Rookie Position Player of the Year in 2023, Croes exceeded all expectations last season, hitting .351, good for fourth in the league, led the league with 135 hits, and had 67 RBIs.
Emery is in his first season with the Goldeyes and is shining behind the plate and with the bat. Among American Association catchers, Emery ranks second in home runs (7), third in batting average (.285), and fourth in RBI (39). Signed as a free agent by the San Francisco Giants in 2021, Emery was called up to Class-AAA Tacoma on two occasions in 2022 and 2023. The 27-year-old played the bulk of last season with the Richmond Flying Squirrels of the Class-AA Eastern League and the Class-A Advanced Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League.
Matulovich has been near the top of the leaderboard in most pitching statistics in 2024, earning him a spot on the West Division squad. He currently holds the league lead in strikeouts (75), sits third in ERA (2.53), and is among the league leaders in wins (5). Now in his second season with the Goldeyes, Matulovich finished 2023 with a 5-9 record and a 3.93 earned run average in 20 starts. His 121 strikeouts were just three shy of the league lead, and he ranked fifth with 116.2 innings pitched. The 27-year-old was originally drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 20th round of the 2018 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft out of the University of California (Berkeley, California).
Seabrooke, now in his fourth season with the Goldeyes, has spent the season among the league leaders in ERA (3.21) after a fantastic start to 2024. In 2023, Seabrooke posted a 6-6 record with a 6.30 earned run average. He also represented Canada at the WBSC Americas Pan Am Games Qualifier in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Seabrooke was selected out of high school by the Baltimore Orioles in the fifth round of the 2013 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft.
The Kansas City Monarchs will host this year’s All-Star Game in Kansas City, Kansas on July 23. Players were chosen by representatives of each club.
The Goldeyes take on those same Monarchs in game two of a three-game series at 6:30 p.m. CDT Wednesday at Blue Cross Park, when Matulovich (5-2, 2.53 ERA) matches up against the Monarchs’ Jackson Goddard (0-3, 5.95 ERA).
