ROSEMONT, IL – The good news was the Winnipeg Goldeyes (8-8) hit a season-high five home runs. The good news was the team hit back-to-back homers for the first time this year, eight-of-the nine in the starting lineup reached base safely. The bad news is the Chicago Dogs (12-4) defeated Winnipeg 14-8 on Tuesday night at Impact Field.
Box Score
In the see-saw game, Winnipeg jumped on the board with two runs in the first inning on the first of two homers hit by right fielder
Max Murphy (3, 4). Both of Murphy's homers went to right field. Murphy is the first Goldeye this year to hit two homers in a game.
Chicago scored once in the first inning and then took the lead with four tallies in the second. The big hit in that inning was a two-run triple by the Dogs second baseman Matt Bottcher.
The Goldeyes were down 6-2 going to the fourth inning and then started to chip away. Designated hitter
Jacob Bockelie (3), and left fielder
Najee Gaskins (1) hit back-to-back homers both to left field. That tightened the Chicago lead to 6-5. In the fifth inning, Murphy tied on a homer. The first four homers for Winnipeg were against Chicago starter Jake Dahlberg. He left after five innings, giving up five runs (all earned) on nine hits while fanning seven which was a season-high for him.
Winnipeg took the lead in the sixth inning against Chicago reliever Johnathon Tripp when first baseman
Tommy McCarthy led off with an infield single. After him, the newcomer in his first game with Winnipeg--second baseman
Jace Mercer (1) belted a two-run homer to right which made it 6-5 visitors. Later in the sixth, third baseman
Dayson Croes
extended his hitting streak to 13 with a double to center. Two batters after Croes, Murphy came through with an RBI double to gave Winnipeg a 7-5 advantage.
Tyler Jandron worked the first five innings for the Goldeyes. He allowed six runs (four earned). He walked five and issued six hits. He struck out three.
In the seventh, Chicago tied the game against Goldeyes reliever
Josh Vincent. After 11 2/3 shutout innings to begin the season he gave up two runs. Dogs shortstop Cody Bohanek (5) led off with a home run. But with two out and a runner at first, Vincent allowed a game-tying double to Chicago left fielder Brennan Metzger which made it 8-8.
Things in the eighth inning would unravel for Winnipeg.
Cam Opp (1-2) issued a lead off walk to Chicago catcher Ryan Lidge. That would gradually lead to a bases loaded no one out predicament. Opp fell behind Bohanek 3 and 1. And Bohanek took advantage by ripping a three-run double to left-center field for the game-deciding hit. After Chicago took an 11-8 lead, the Dogs added three more runs for the six-run eighth. The first seven Dogs reached base, and sent up 11 batters. Opp has lost his last two games. He surrendered six runs in 1 2/3 innings and gave up six hits, six runs (all earned).
Joe Cavallero (1-0) pitched a perfect eighth inning for the win.
The teams meet early on Wednesday with a scheduled 10:30 a.m. Central time first pitch. The scheduled starters are for Winnipeg right-hander
Landen Bourassa (1-1) against Chicago righty Tyler Palm (3-0).
The Goldeyes return home to Shaw Park Tuesday June 6 when Chicago pays a return visit to Winnipeg.
