WINNIPEG, MB – Winnipeg Goldeyes right-hander Joey Matulovich has been chosen as the American Association’s Rawlings Pitcher of the Month, the league announced Monday. Matulovich (pronounced mah-TOO-loh-vitch) was 3-1 in June, with a 1.59 earned run average, and 48 strikeouts. He was named Pitcher of the Week on June 10 after he won both his starts, allowing just one earned run in the process. A 7-2 victory over Kane County at Blue Cross Park June 3 was followed up with a spectacular complete game, 14 strikeout performance in an 8-1 triumph over the Milwaukee Milkmen in Franklin, Wisconsin June 9. The 26-year-old is 5-1 on the season with a 2.14 ERA, is tops in the circuit in strikeouts (71) and is tied with teammate Landen Bourassa for the league lead in innings pitched (59.0). A native of Walnut Creek, California, Matulovich joined the Goldeyes during the first week of the 2023 campaign and finished the season with a 5-9 record and a 3.93 ERA 20 starts. His 121 strikeouts were just three shy of the league lead, and he ranked fifth with 116.2 innings pitched. Matulovich was originally drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 20th round of the 2018 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft out of the University of California (Berkeley, California). He spent parts of five seasons in the Brewers’ system, reaching as high as Class-A Advanced with the Midwest League’s Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Matulovich appeared in 95 career games in the affiliated minor leagues, primarily out of the bullpen. He compiled a 12-10 record with a 4.66 ERA and two saves. Matulovich is the first Goldeyes player to garner a monthly honour since Luis Ramírez was named Pitcher of the Month in June 2022. GARY, IN – Right fielder Max Murphy ’s tenth inning sacrifice fly was the difference Sunday afternoon as the Winnipeg Goldeyes (23-23) defeated the Gary SouthShore RailCats 4-3 at U.S. Steel Yard. Winnipeg swept the three-game series. Box Score After designated hitter Roby Enríquez moved automatic baserunner Ramón Bramasco to third, Murphy lifted a 3-2 pitch to centre field to give the Goldeyes the lead. In the bottom of the inning, automatic runner Francisco Del Valle was thrown out at the plate by third baseman Bramasco for the second out, attempting to score on first baseman Jackson Valera’s fielder’s choice. Nick Trogrlic-Iverson (W, 3-2) then got third baseman Olivier Basabe swinging to end the ballgame. Winnipeg took a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth on first baseman Jake McMurray ’s two-out double into the left field corner that scored second baseman Dayson Croes . Gary SouthShore (18-28) tied the contest with one down in the bottom of the ninth when José Contreras came home on Gio Díaz’s single to right-centre field. Two batters later, Bramasco retired centre fielder Del Valle in spectacular fashion, diving into the seating area to snare a foul pop-up and send the game to extra innings. For the third straight game, the Goldeyes scored in their first at-bat when Croes lined a two-out single to centre field to score Murphy and give the visitors a 1-0 edge. The RailCats evened the score in their half of the first on a bases-loaded walk issued to Valera that forced Díaz to the plate and they took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Valera drove in Del Valle with a base hit. Winnipeg pulled even in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to right field off the bat of centre fielder Cadyn Schwabe that scored McMurray. Colton Eastman started for the Goldeyes and worked the first three frames, giving up two runs on two hits and striking out four. He was relieved by Ryder Yakel , Ben Onyshko , and finally, Trogrlic-Iverson. Tai Tiedemann was Gary SouthShore’s starter, and he pitched six innings and allowed two runs on six hits. Joan Valdez (L, 2-2) came in to work the tenth inning and was charged with the loss. Winnipeg has Canada Day off before opening a three-game series against the Explorers in Sioux City, Iowa Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. CDT. GARY, IN – On the strength of a five-run first inning, the Winnipeg Goldeyes (22-23) defeated the Gary SouthShore RailCats 10-4 at U.S. Steel Yard Saturday. The visiting team has now won all five meetings between the two clubs this season. Box Score The Goldeyes took a 1-0 lead two batters into the ballgame when first baseman Roby Enríquez doubled into the left field corner to bring third baseman Ramón Bramasco around to score. After second baseman Dayson Croes drove in Enríquez with a sacrifice fly to centre field, right fielder Braxton Turner notched the first runs batted in of his professional career with a two-run single to shallow right field. Catcher Rob Emery and designated hitter Miles Simington scored on the play, and it was 4-0 Winnipeg. Finally, shortstop Andy Armstrong lined a single to left field to score left fielder Keshawn Lynch and extend the lead to five runs. Gary SouthShore (18-27) pulled to within two in the bottom of the second inning on a three-run home run to right-centre field off the bat of left fielder José Contreras. The RailCats then cut the Goldeyes’ lead to one in their next at-bat, when second baseman Gio Díaz scored on shortstop Marcos González’s single to left field, but it would be all Goldeyes from that point on. Winnipeg scored a pair of runs in the sixth. First, centre fielder Cadyn Schwabe was caught in a rundown between third and home after Bramasco hit into a fielder’s choice but was able to elude the tag of catcher Guillermo Quintana. Then Bramasco beat the throw to the plate after Enríquez grounded into a fielder’s choice to make the score 7-4. In the top of the ninth inning, Armstrong drew a bases-loaded walk that forced in Simington before Bramasco singled up the middle to drive in Lynch and Turner to make the score 10-4. Landen Bourassa (W, 4-3) went seven innings for the Goldeyes, allowing four runs – all earned – on nine hits. He struck out four. Tasker Strobel and Nick Trogrlic-Iverson each contributed an inning of scoreless relief. Peyton Long (L, 2-4) started for the RailCats and gave up five runs on nine hits in five innings of work. Bramasco had three RBIs for Winnipeg, with Enríquez, Turner, and Armstrong each driving in a pair. Simington went four-for-four at the plate. Schwabe was signed earlier Saturday. The 23-year-old appeared in five games for the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks earlier this month. Born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, he is the first native of the Peace Garden State to play for the Goldeyes in the team’s 31-season history. His father Jason is originally from Winnipeg. The series concludes Sunday at 2:00 p.m. CDT with right-hander Colton Eastman (2-7, 6.98 ERA) making the start for Winnipeg. Gary SouthShore will counter with Tai Tiedemann (3-4, 5.55 ERA). Trevor Curl will have the pregame show on CJNU 93.7 FM and cjnu.ca at 1:30 p.m. The video stream of all games is also available free of charge at AABaseball.TV . The team returns home Friday, July 5 at 7:00 p.m., when the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks visit Blue Cross Park.
