WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes lost 5-3 to the Wichita Wingnuts in Game Three of the American Association Championship Series at Shaw Park on Sunday evening.
The Wingnuts lead the best-of-five series 2-1.
The Wingnuts rallied for three two-out runs in the top of the eighth inning to take the lead. With the Goldeyes ahead 3-2, Christian Stringer singled through the right side to put the tying run on base. After Stringer stole second on a close play, Martin Medina drew a full count walk. Brent Clevlen tied the game with a bloop single to shallow right. TJ Mittelstaedt then pulled a single through the right side to drive in Medina with the go-ahead run. Matt Chavez added an RBI single up the middle that made it 5-3 Wichita.
Mike Devine worked a scoreless bottom of the eighth for the Wingnuts, while Ryan Chaffee and Evan Rutckyj combined for a scoreless top of the ninth for Winnipeg.
Ryan Kussmaul retired the Goldeyes in order in the bottom of the ninth to earn his third save of the postseason.
The Goldeyes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. David Rohm singled sharply through the left side with one out. After Josh Romanski drew a four-pitch walk, Reggie Abercrombie lined a double off the left field wall that scored Rohm. Shawn Pleffner made it 2-0 with a groundball to second base that plated Romanski from third.
With two outs and no one on base in the bottom of the fourth, Wes Darvill pulled a double into the right field corner. Mason Katz followed with a line drive single to right that scored Darvill and extended the Goldeyes’ lead to 3-0.
Richard Prigatano put the Wingnuts on the board with a one-out, solo home run to left-centre in the top of the fifth.
In the top of the sixth, Stringer singled to centre with one out. Two batters later Clevlen singled to left to put the tying runs on base. Mittelstaedt doubled to left-centre to score Stringer with the Wingnuts’ second run. On the same play, Clevlen attemped to score the tying run from first, but was thrown out at the plate on a relay from Darvill.
Kevin McGovern started for the Goldeyes and took a no-decision, allowing two earned runs on six hits in six innings. McGovern walked none and struck out seven.
Jordan Cooper started for Wichita and also took a no-decision, allowing three earned runs on four hits over six innings. Cooper walked two and struck out two.
Josh Goossen-Brown (1-0) earned the win in relief, while Victor Capellan (0-1) took the loss. Goldeyes’ pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts.
Game Four of the American Association Championship Series is Monday night at Shaw Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Charle Rosario (11-5, 3.06) faces right-hander Eddie Medina (9-3, 3.09).
