FARGO, ND – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (49-42) lost 11-9 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in 11 innings at Newman Outdoor Field on Saturday night.
With the Goldeyes leading 9-6 in the bottom of the 11th, the RedHawks (61-31) rallied for five two-out, unearned runs to win the game. After Fargo-Moorhead loaded the bases on a single, an error, and a walk, Brian Olson lined a two-out single to centre that scored Devan Ahart and Correlle Prime to cut the Goldeyes’ lead to 9-8. Carlos Garcia then worked a full count before hitting a three-run home run down the left field line that just cleared the wall.
Michael Hope (7-0) picked up the win in relief, while Justin Kamplain (1-1) took the loss for the Goldeyes.
Winnipeg broke a 6-6 tie with three two-out runs in the top of the 11th. With two outs and no one on base, Kyle Martin walked. After Willy Garcia singled through the left side, Dominic Ficociello lined a double to left-centre that drove in Martin with the lead run. Alex Perez followed with a line drive, two-run single to centre that made it 9-6.
Perez finished the night with four hits and a career-high four RBI.
The Goldeyes took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Tyler Marincov led off the game with a double to left-centre, which extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Wes Darvill walked, and two batters later, Martin ripped a single down the right field line that scored Marincov.
The RedHawks took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third on a two-run home run down the left field line from Brennan Metzger and a two-out, RBI double from Chris Jacobs.
Back-to-back two-out, RBI singles from Tim Colwell and Ahart in the bottom of the fourth stretched Fargo’s lead to 5-1.
The Goldeyes started chipping away in the top of the seventh. Ficociello singled to left leading off and advanced to second on an error by Prime in left field. Perez doubled to right-centre to drive in Ficociello and was followed by an RBI single to left from Adrian Marin.
With one out in the top of the eighth, Willy Garcia singled through the left side, took second on Ficociello’s groundout to third, and scored on a two-out single through the left side from Perez.
Trailing 5-4 in the top of the ninth, the Goldeyes scored twice to take the lead. Kevin Garcia walked leading off. John Price Jr. pinch ran for Garcia, and two batters later, Darvill singled through the right side to put runners on first and second with one out. Reggie Abercrombie hit a sharp groundball that deflected off the foot of Fargo reliever JR Bunda and ricocheted into right field. Price scored the tying run on the infield single. After Darvill stole third, Martin hit a sacrifice fly to deep right.
Fargo tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out, infield single from Leobaldo Pina that scored Ahart from third. Ahart finished the night with six hits, tying an American Association single-game record.
Kevin McGovern started for the Goldeyes and took a no-decision, allowing five earned runs on 14 hits in six and one-third innings. McGovern walked one and struck out two.
Michael Tamburino started for the RedHawks and also took a no-decision, allowing one earned run on three hits in five innings. Tamburino walked one and struck out five.
