WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (52-42) beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats 13-7 at Shaw Park on Tuesday night.
Winnipeg took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Dominic Ficociello and Alex Perez opened the inning with back-to-back walks. Two batters later, Kevin Garcia lined a single to right-centre that scored Ficociello.
Gary SouthShore went in front 2-1 in the top of the third on a solo home run from Marcus Mooney and an RBI single from Randy Santiesteban.
The Goldeyes answered backing the bottom of the third when Willy Garcia smacked a two-run home run to right field.
Winnipeg scored five times in the bottom of the fourth to open an 8-2 advantage. Kevin Garcia doubled down the right field line with one out and scored on a Tyler Marincov single to centre. Marincov’s single extended his hitting streak to 14 games. Wes Darvill followed with a walk, setting up a three-run home run to left from Reggie Abercrombie. Two batters later, Willy Garcia lined an opposite-field home run that struck the scoreboard in right-centre.
The RailCats pulled within 8-5 in the top of the fifth on RBI singles from Santiesteban, Alex Crosby, and Daniel de la Calle.
In the bottom of the sixth, Abercrombie reached on catcher’s interference, took second when Kyle Martin walked, and scored on a single through the left side from Willy Garcia. Garcia finished the night with four RBI.
Darvill singled home Perez in the bottom of the seventh, and the Goldeyes made it 11-5 on a Martin RBI fielder’s choice. Marincov drove in the Goldeyes’ final two runs with a single in the eighth.
Santiesteban hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth before Brandon Bingel struck out Raymond Jones to end the game.
Mitchell Lambson (13-2) started for the Goldeyes and picked up his 13th win of the season. Lambson allowed five earned runs on 15 hits in five innings. Lambson walked none and struck out five. The 13 wins tie Lambson for second on the Goldeyes’ single-season list.
Trevor Lubking (5-11) started for the RailCats and took the loss, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on seven hits in five innings. Lubking walked five and struck out five.
Christian Torres and Cameron McVey combined for three shutout innings in relief of Lambson. The Goldeyes’ offence combined to draw 10 walks.
