WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes re-signed outfielder Jonathan Moroney on Tuesday.
Moroney ranked second in the American Association batting race last season, combining for a .331 average in 76 games between the Goldeyes and Texas AirHogs. The Houston, Texas native added 19 doubles, seven triples (tied for third in the league), six home runs, 34 RBI, and 13 stolen bases in 15 attempts. Moroney was 17-for-39 (.436) during his 11 games with the Goldeyes, and hit safely in 58 of 76 contests overall. A right-handed batter and defender, Moroney amassed three hitting streaks of 10-plus games, including a 13-game stretch from July 31st through August 30th in which he was 19-for-46 (.413). Moroney was acquired from the AirHogs on August 9th as part of a six-player trade.
“I’m glad to have Jonathan back,” said Goldeyes’ manager Rick Forney. “He did a nice job for us when we picked him up for the stretch run. Unfortunately, he pulled his hamstring in St. Paul and that kind of ended his season. I’m hoping he can come in and impact our lineup the same way this year.”
Moroney enters his fourth season of professional baseball, and is a lifetime .332 hitter with a .373 on-base percentage and a .508 slugging percentage. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound outfielder played four seasons of college baseball at Texas A&M University (College Station, Texas) from 2013-16. During both his junior and senior campaigns, Moroney helped the Aggies to an NCAA Super Regional berth, as well as a top-10 national ranking. Moroney—who will be 26 on Opening Night—began his professional career in 2017 where he hit .443 for the Pecos League’s Alpine Cowboys. After finishing his rookie year with the now-defunct Salina Stockade, Moroney was a member of the Chicago Dogs’ expansion team in 2018 before signing with the AirHogs last April. Moroney has hit .294 or better in each of his three seasons in the American Association.
The Goldeyes now have four players under contract for the 2020 season. American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during spring training, which begins May 7th.
