GRAND PRAIRIE, TX – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (2-0) beat the Texas AirHogs 7-1 at AirHogs Stadium on Friday night.
Tied at 1-1 in the top of the sixth, the Goldeyes sent eight batters to the plate, and scored three runs to take the lead for the remainder of the night. Dominic Ficociello walked leading off and took second when Reggie Abercrombie’s line drive struck AirHogs’ starter Zech Lemond and resulted in an infield single. Two batters later, James Harris walked to load the bases. Lemond was then relieved by Gan Quan. Alex Perez punched a hard, groundball single through the left side that scored Ficociello with the go-ahead run. Luis Touron plated Abercrombie with a single through the right side, and Adrian Marin capped the rally with a sacrifice fly to right.
Mitchell Lambson made the lead stand with a scoreless bottom of the sixth, and went on to earn the victory. Lambson (1-0) allowed one earned run on three hits in six innings, walking one and striking out five. Lambson threw just 78 pitches.
Perez and Touron opened the top of the eighth with back-to-back walks. After Marin was retired on a line drive to shallow centre, Wes Darvill grounded into a fielder’s choice that set up first and third with two outs. Perez was awarded home and Darvill advanced to second when AirHogs’ pitcher Mi Jia Hong was charged with a balk. Darvill then stole third and scored the Goldeyes’ sixth run on a Willy Garcia infield single.
Winnipeg tacked on its final run in the top of the ninth. Josh Romanski drew a one-out walk. Pinch hitter Kevin Lachance lined a single to centre, and Romanski was able to go first to third when he recognized AirHogs’ centre fielder Javion Randle waited back on the ball. Perez drove in Romanski on a groundball to second for his 100th career professional RBI.
Jack Charleston, Mitchell Aker, and Tyler Garkow each worked a scoreless inning in relief of Lambson.
Lemond (0-1) took the loss for the AirHogs (0-2), allowing four earned runs on six hits in five and one-third innings. Lemond walked three and struck out six.
Marin opened the game with a single to right and took third when Darvill doubled into the right field corner. Two batters later, Ficociello brought in Marin on a groundball to second.
The AirHogs tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a bloop single to centre from Luo Jinjun.
Touron finished with two hits and two walks. Garcia also had two hits. Winnipeg’s offence drew eight walks.
