WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed second baseman Alex Perez on Tuesday.

Last year, Perez spent time at three levels of the Minnesota Twins’ farm system, including his first career opportunity in Triple-A.  The Miami, Florida native hit a combined .242 with 39 runs scored, 11 doubles, 34 RBI, and 41 walks in 101 games.  Defensively, Perez had a .980 fielding percentage at second base, and was charged with just six errors in 76 total games at the position.  The 26-year-old hit .301 with runners in scoring position (93 at bats), and posted a career-best, five-hit game on July 4th while playing for the Double-A Southern League’s Chattanooga Lookouts.

“I’m thrilled to add Alex to our team,” said Goldeyes’ manager Rick Forney.  “I’ve been looking for a second baseman on the current free agent market, and Alex really stood out to me.  Alex has Double-A and Triple-A experience over the last two years, and he is a fantastic defender.”

Perez is entering his fifth season of professional baseball, and was originally drafted by the Twins in the 23rd round in 2015 out of Virginia Tech University (Blacksburg, Virginia).  A left-handed hitter and right-handed fielder, Perez owns a .248 batting average, .346 on-base percentage, and 12.3 percent walk rate (the 2018 American Association average walk rate was 8.8 percent) in 325 career games played.  Perez has a lifetime .979 fielding percentage in 254 games at second base, and has placed in his league’s top-three in that same category three times in his first four professional campaigns.  The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Perez carries valuable LS-3 classification in the American Association, and has compiled a .356 on-base percentage in 388 plate appearances when leading off an inning.

The Goldeyes now have 24 players under contract for the 2019 season.  American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during spring training, which begins May 4th.
