SIOUX CITY, IA – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (11-9) lost 9-0 to the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis and Clark Park on Wednesday afternoon.

The Explorers used a five-run bottom of the first inning to take early command of the game.  Derrick Robinson, Michael Lang, and Noah Perio Jr. hit consecutive singles to open the inning and load the bases with no outs.  Nate Samson followed with a two-run single to right.  The Explorers took a 3-0 lead on a delayed double steal of second and home, with Perio narrowly beating Jacob Rogers’ relay throw to the plate after Samson had taken off for second.  Jarek Cunningham singled home Samson with the Explorers’ fourth run.  After Matty Johnson singled Cunningham to third, Cunningham scored following Johnson’s steal attempt of second.  Sioux City finished the game with seven stolen bases.

Kyle Anderson (3-1) took the loss for the Goldeyes, allowing seven runs, six earned, on 11 hits in four innings.  Anderson walked one and struck out three.  Anderson’s walk was an intentional free pass to Samson in the bottom of the fourth, and it was the first issued by Anderson in 26 and one-third innings this season.

Cunningham hit a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the third to make it 6-0.  Perio drove in Robinson with a groundout to second in the bottom of the fourth.

One-out singles from Lang and Perio in the sixth set up a fielder’s choice from Samson.  Lang scored on the play when Casio Grider was charged with a throwing error attempting to complete a double play.  Tommy Mendonca hit a ground rule double down the left field line that scored Samson with the final run of the game.

Zach Dando worked four strong innings in relief of Anderson, allowng two runs, one earned, on six hits.

Graham Johnson (3-0) earned the win for the Explorers with six scoreless innings.  Johnson allowed two hits, walked five, and struck out four.  The Explorers’ defence turned five double plays in the game.
