WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes re-signed outfielder Reggie Abercrombie on Monday morning.
Abercrombie hit .318 for the Goldeyes in 2015 with six home runs and 37 RBI in 47 games played. Winnipeg re-acquired the former Major Leaguer from the Can-Am League’s Sussex County Miners in a trade on July 18th. Following the American Association season, Abercrombie appeared in nine games for the Atlantic League’s Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, hitting .308 and helping Southern Maryland reach the Atlantic League Championship Series. The Columbus, GA native first joined the Goldeyes in 2014 and produced one of the best all-around seasons in team history. Abercrombie played in all 100 games while adding a .284 batting average, 19 home runs, 74 RBI, and 23 stolen bases as part of Winnipeg’s 63-win club that won the North Division.
“We are thrilled to have Reggie return for 2016,” said Goldeyes’ manager Rick Forney. “Reggie is still very much a large presence in the middle of the lineup, and we expect him to continue to provide our club with a solid veteran leadership.”
In 2010, Abercrombie helped the Sioux Falls Pheasants reach the American Association Championship Series, and became the first player in league history to hit 20-plus home runs (22) and steal 20-plus bases (34) in one year. Abercrombie retains that distinction to this day, and fell one home run shy of duplicating the feat with the Goldeyes in 2014. Abercrombie ranks second all-time on the American Association leaderboard with 79 home runs and trails John Allen by eight for the league record. Abercrombie is also 10th all-time in the American Association in batting average (.308, minimum 1,500 plate appearances), 10th in runs scored (293), fifth in RBI (324), tied for sixth in stolen bases (110), and second in slugging percentage (.527, minimum 1,500 plate appearances).
The 2016 season will be Abercrombie’s 17th in professional baseball. The 35-year-old outfielder was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers as a 23rd round pick in 1999. Abercrombie began his career the following summer and reached the Double-A level in just his third season as a pro. Abercrombie made his Major League debut with the Florida Marlins in 2006, and spent the entire season on a roster guided by National League Manager of the Year Joe Girardi. A right-handed hitter and fielder, Abercrombie played two more seasons in the Majors with the Marlins and Houston Astros. In 180 games at the Major League level, Abercrombie’s resume includes home runs off of Roger Clemens and C.C. Sabathia, as well as base hits against Hall of Fame pitchers Tom Glavine and John Smoltz. Abercrombie is a lifetime .277 hitter, and has averaged 99 runs scored, 31 doubles, 23 home runs, 89 RBI, and 42 stolen bases per 162 contests. Standing at 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, Abercrombie has more total base hits (1,819) than career games played (1,750), and enters the upcoming season 42 RBI away from 1,000.
Abercrombie is the third Goldeye officially signed to a contract for 2016.
