WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes re-signed second baseman Casio Grider on Monday afternoon.

Grider returns for a third season in Winnipeg, and is coming off a 2016 campaign in which he batted .279 with 11 home runs and 68 RBI.  The Loma Linda, California native appeared in 99 games, adding 61 runs scored, 18 doubles, 22 stolen bases, and a .361 on-base percentage.  Grider committed just eight errors all season, and his .983 fielding percentage at second base ranked second in the American Association at the position.  Grider, who bats and throws right-handed, was especially potent down the stretch, driving in 51 runs over his final 52 contests.  Grider then hit .308 in the postseason with eight more runs scored.

“I’m very excited to announce the return of Casio,” said Goldeyes’ manager Rick Forney.  “Casio is coming off the best season of his career, and in my mind, he’s the top second baseman in the American Association.  Casio offers a unique package of speed and power that is very tough to come by in independent baseball.”

Grider is entering his ninth season of professional baseball, and is a lifetime .255 hitter with 35 home runs and 240 RBI in 633 games.  The 29-year-old Grider was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 14th round in 2009 out of Newberry College (Newberry, South Carolina).  Grider reached the Double-A level twice during his tenure with the Dodgers, and in 2014, he became the first Newberry alumnus since 1933 to reach Triple-A.  The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Grider has averaged 92 runs, 26 doubles, eight triples, nine home runs, 62 RBI, and 46 stolen bases per 162 games as a professional.

The Goldeyes now have eight players under contract for the 2017 season, including six from their 2016 American Association championship team.  American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during spring training, which begins May 6th.

Notes: Grider hit .365 with runners in scoring position last season (126 at bats) and .339 with two outs and runners in scoring position (62 at bats)…Grider is 45-for-57 in steal attempts with the Goldeyes since 2015…the 45 stolen bases rank 12th in team history…Grider has stolen 20 or more bases in six of his first eight professional seasons, including a career-high 31 in 2011…Grider appeared in a Major League spring training game for the Dodgers in 2012, collecting a double…Grider played mostly shortstop for the Goldeyes in 2015 where he ranked tied for fifth at the position with a .957 fielding percentage…during his time with the Dodgers, Grider also saw playing time in the outfield
