WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes lost 12-7 to the Wichita Wingnuts in Game One of the American Association Championship Series at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Wingnuts lead the best-of-five series 1-0.

Christian Stringer led off the bottom of the first with a double to left-centre and took third on a groundball to third base from Martin Medina. Brent Clevlen followed with a single up the middle that scored Stringer with the game’s first run.

In the bottom of the second, Jacob Morris drew a one-out walk, and took second on a single to centre from Leo Vargas. Stringer singled home Morris to make it 2-0. An error on the same play allowed Vargas to score Wichita’s third run. Two batters later, Clevlen doubled down the left field line to score Stringer. TJ Mittelstaedt stretched the lead to 5-0 with a two-out, RBI triple to right-centre. Mittelstaedt then scored when Matt Chavez reached on an error.

The Goldeyes began chipping away in the top of the third. Mason Katz was hit by a pitch leading off. After Wingnuts’ starter Danny Gutierrez struck out the next two hitters, David Rohm kept the inning alive with a single up the middle. Josh Romanski then reached on an error by Vargas at shortstop which allowed Katz to score from second. Reggie Abercrombie cut the deficit to 6-3 with a two-out, two-run double to centre.

In the top of the fourth, David Bergin singled to left leading off and scored on a Wes Darvill triple down the right field line. Katz plated Darvill with a sacrifice fly to left that pulled the Goldeyes within one.

Wichita re-extended the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Mittelstaedt drew a leadoff walk and scored on a Chavez triple to right-centre. Richard Prigatano followed with a two-run homer to left-centre that made it 9-5.

The Goldeyes answered back with two runs in the top of the sixth. Bergin led off the frame with a solo home run down the left field line. Two batters later, Katz crushed a line drive homer to left-centre that made it 9-7 Wichita.

Zack Dodson and Evan Rutckyj combined for two scoreless innings over the sixth and seventh to keep the Goldeyes within two runs.

The Wingnuts opened up a 12-7 lead in the bottom of the eighth when Mittelstaedt hit a two-out, three-run home run to right-centre.

Danny Gutierrez (2-0) started for the Wingnuts and picked up the win. Gutierrez allowed five runs, two earned, on seven hits in five innings. Gutierrez walked none and struck out six.

Charle Rosario (1-1) started for the Goldeyes and took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits in two innings. Rosario walked two and struck out none.

Game Two of the American Association Championship Series against the Wichita Wingnuts is Thursday night. First pitch from Lawrence-Dumont Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Edwin Carl (9-4, 4.60) faces right-hander Alex Boshers (11-4, 3.72).
