WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes re-signed first baseman Kyle Martin on Tuesday.
After joining the Goldeyes in early-June, Martin hit .275 with 14 home runs and 67 RBI (tied for 12th in the American Association) in 82 games played. The Greenville, South Carolina native added 60 runs scored, 19 doubles, 44 walks, and finished 15th in the league with a .495 slugging percentage. Martin also struck out just 44 times, and his 13 percent strikeout rate was the second lowest in the American Association among players with a slugging percentage of .475 or higher. Defensively, the 27-year-old led all first baseman with a .997 fielding percentage. Martin was charged with just two errors all season with the first not taking place until August 26th. Martin drove in 59 runs over the Goldeyes’ final 60 games, and his .352 average with runners in scoring position ranked 10th in the league (minimum 75 at bats).
“I’m glad to have Kyle back,” said Goldeyes’ manager Rick Forney. “He was a big time run-producer in the middle of our lineup last year, and was, in my opinion, the best defensive first baseman in the league!”
Martin heads into his sixth year of professional baseball, and is a lifetime .234 hitter with 70 home runs and 299 RBI in 501 games played. A left-handed hitter and fielder, Martin has averaged 86 runs scored, 33 doubles, 23 home runs, 97 RBI, and 65 walks per 162 games in his career. Martin was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the fourth round in 2015 out of the University of South Carolina (Columbia, South Carolina) where he helped the Gamecocks to a second-place finish at the 2012 College World Series as a freshman. The 6-foot-2, 240-pound Martin reached the Double-A level in 2018, and was voted a High-A Florida State League All-Star in the Phillies’ system during the 2016 season.
The Goldeyes now have 13 players under contract for the 2020 season. American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during spring training, which begins May 7th.
