WICHITA, KS – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (22-21) lost 7-4 to the Wichita Wingnuts at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Monday night.
After the Goldeyes jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Wingnuts responded with four runs in the bottom half to take the lead for the remainder of the night. Singles from Harrison Kain and Christian Stringer set up an RBI single to centre from Brent Clevlen that tied the game. Two batters later, Matt Chavez hit a three-run home run to left-centre that made it 4-1.
In the bottom of the third, the Wingnuts put runners on second and third with no outs. Goldeyes’ starting pitcher Zach Nuding was able to limit the damage to just one run, which came on a two-out, bases loaded walk to Richard Prigatano.
“Zach did some good things on the mound tonight, but Chavez hurt us,” said Goldeyes’ hitting coach Tom Vaeth. “When you don’t execute pitches against this club, they hurt you. We think we have a good game plan going in, but if you don’t make that pitch, they’ll put it on the board. Zach did a good job slowing down and speeding up to get zeroes later in the game.”
Chavez lined an RBI double down the left field line in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-1, and later scored the Wingnuts’ seventh run on a Prigatano sacrifice fly.
Wes Darvill lined a single to right leading off the top of the seventh and took third when the ball bounced past Prigatano. Darvill scored on a Mason Katz groundout to third that cut Wichita’s lead to 7-2.
In the top of the ninth, Shawn Pleffner drew a leadoff walk and went to third on a David Bergin double down the left field line. Pleffner scored on a wild pitch, while Bergin came home when Darvill lifted a sacrifice fly to centre for the game’s final run.
Josh Romanski drove in the Goldeyes’ first run with an infield single in the top of the first.
“Offensively, we just didn’t have our legs tonight,” said Vaeth. “We rolled over on some balls–just a bad night. Hopefully we can take the good things Zach did for us, try to build on the positives, and come out a little more rested tomorrow.”
Nuding (2-5) took the loss for the Goldeyes, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits in seven innings. Nuding walked three and struck out one.
Wingnuts’ starter Eddie Medina (6-1) picked up the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits over seven innings. Medina walked three and struck out five.
Mitchell Lambson pitched a scoreless inning of relief and has allowed just one earned run in his last 13.0 innings. Jordan Ebert finished with two hits and a walk. Andrew Sohn had two stolen bases.
Game two of the three-game series is Tuesday night at 6:05 p.m. Zack Dodson (2-2, 6.18) faces right-hander Jordan Cooper (3-0, 2.39). All the action can be heard locally on 93.7 FM CJNU and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca
