GARY, IN – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (24-22) shutout the Gary SouthShore RailCats 3-0 at US Steel Yard on Thursday night.
Edwin Carl (4-1) earned the win, pitching seven-plus scoreless innings. Carl scattered five hits, walked two, and struck out six. Beginning with the final out in the bottom of the first inning, Carl retired 13 consecutive batters.
For a seventh straight game, the Goldeyes took a first-inning lead. On an 0-2 count, Andrew Sohn drove a triple to left-centre field and scored when David Rohm reached on an error by third baseman Andy DeJesus. Two batters later, Reggie Abercrombie hit a solo home run off the batter’s eye in centre field. It was Abercrombie’s seventh career home run and 25th RBI in just 27 career games at US Steel Yard.
In the bottom of the inning, the RailCats put runners on second and third with on out, but Carl came back from a 3-0 count to retire Frank Martinez on a foul popup behind the plate. After DeJesus walked to load the bases, Carl got John Alfonso to groundout to shortstop to end the inning.
The Goldeyes opened a 3-0 lead in the top of the third when Rohm reached on a leadoff, infield single. Josh Romanski followed with a long double to right-centre that scored Rohm from first.
The RailCats threatened again in the bottom of the eighth with runners on the corners and one out. AfterVictor Capellan relieved Mitchell Lambson, Mason Katz threw out Reggie Wilson trying to steal second base for the second out of the inning. Capellan then struck out pinch hitter Colin Willis to end the frame.
Rohm drew a one-out walk in the top of the ninth and took second when Romanski singled through the right side. Two batters later, Shawn Pleffner drilled a two-out, two-run double to right-centre that broke the game open at 5-0.
Ryan Chaffee struck out two during a scoreless bottom of the ninth to close out the game.
Alex Gunn (3-4) started and took the loss for the RailCats, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits in six and one-third innings. Gunn walked one and struck out three.
David Bergin singled in the top of the sixth to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Jordan Ebert had three hits in the winning effort.
