WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (31-26) fell 8-6 to the Sioux Falls Canaries Thursday evening at Shaw Park.

Box Score

The Goldeyes opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Kyle Martin hit a two-run single to centre field off former Goldeyes starter Alex Boshers.

Sioux Falls however tied the game with two runs in the top of the second inning. First Brett Vertigan executed a textbook safety squeeze bunt scoring Mitch Glasser, then one batter later Alay Lago scored Jordan Ebert with an infield single.

The Canaries took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Graham Low scored on a single to left field off the bat of Kevin Taylor before a short but significant storm system moved through the downtown area.

The tarp was rolled out as the Goldeyes were preparing to bat in the bottom of the inning, but enough rain had already fallen to cause an 80-minute delay while the infield was restored to proper playing condition.

When the game resumed the Goldeyes re-took the lead when Tyler Hill singled to centre field scoring Reggie Abercrombie and Kevin Garcia scored on a Wes Darvill single off Canaries reliever Will Solomon (W, 3-2).

Unlike Boshers, Goldeyes starter Kevin McGovern (L, 8-4) returned to the mound after the rain delay and Sioux Falls got to him for three runs in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI double by Clint Coulter and run-scoring singles by Glasser and Vertigan.

McGovern exited with five strikeouts, leaving him just one shy of Chris Salamida‘s career franchise record of 435.

The Canaries added to their lead in the top of the sixth inning when Andrew Ely hit a two-run home run with two out to make the score 8-4 in favour of the visitors.

The Goldeyes responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh inning when Dominic Ficociello scored Martin and Willy Garcia with a double to centre field to end the scoring.

The Fish did threaten in the bottom of the ninth inning as Martin hit a deep fly ball to the warning track in left field with James Harris on base, but Willy Garcia ultimately flew out to end the ballgame. Sam Bragg earned his fifth save of the season for Sioux Falls.

The Goldeyes now travel overnight to Kansas City, Kansas where they will play a three-game series with the T-Bones beginning Friday at 7:05 PM. Right-hander Joel Seddon (2-3, 7.34 ERA) will start in the series-opener.
