SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Winnipeg Goldeyes beat the Sioux Falls Canaries 9-7 in 10 innings at Sioux Falls Stadium on Saturday evening.
Tied at 7-7 in the top of the 10th, Reggie Abercrombie lined a solo home run to left leading off. Tucker Nathans followed with a solo shot on a towering fly ball down the left field line.
Jack Charleston struck out two batters in a perfect bottom of the 10th to earn his first save of the year. The appearance was the 100th of Charleston’s professional career.
The Canaries forced extra innings when Jabari Henry hit a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game at 7-7.
Victor Capellan (1-2) picked up the win in relief. Ryan Fritze (1-2) took the loss for Sioux Falls.
Jordan Smith walked leading off the bottom of the first and went on to score the game’s first run on a two-out wild pitch.
In the top of the fourth, Gavin Stupienski led off with an infield single. Two batters later, Dave Sappelt beat out an infield single, and the Goldeyes loaded the bases with one out when Eric Aguilera lined a single to left. Abercrombie followed with a single to left that scored Stupienski with the tying run. After Canaries’ starter Miles Nordgren struck out Nathans, Josh Mazzola ripped a two-out, three-run double into the left field corner that put Winnipeg in front 4-1.
The Canaries scratched out an unearned run in the bottom of the third when Blake Schmit doubled to left-centre and scored on a two-out error charged to Sappelt in left field.
Winnipeg put runners on the corners with one out in the top of the fourth, and extended the lead to 5-2 when Sappelt grounded into a double play that scored Stupienski.
Chris Grayson singled home Patrick Fiala with two outs in the bottom of the fourth to pull the Canaries within 5-3.
Sappelt drew a nine-pitch walk with one out in the top of the seventh and went to third on a double to right-centre by Aguilera. After Tyler Wolfe relieved Neal Kunik, Abercrombie laced a single to left that scored both runners and made it 7-3 Winnipeg.
The Canaries answered back in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out, two-run home run from David Bergin.
Alex Boshers started for the Goldeyes and took a no-decision, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits in five innings. Boshers walked two and struck out eight.
Nordgren also took a no-decision, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits in four innings. Nordgren walked two and struck out three.
Josh Blanco and Cameron McVey each worked a scoreless inning of relief. Abercrombie finished the game with four hits and four RBI.
