Goldeyes Swing Pair of Trades
The Goldeyes recently made a pair of deals with Frontier League clubs. Last Friday, utility player Ridge Hoopii-Haslam was traded to the Joliet Slammers in exchange for a player to be named later. Monday, right-handed pitcher Robert Tasin was sent to the Evansville Otters, also for a player to be named. The trades marked the final transactions relating to the Goldeyes’ 2016 championship roster. A full breakdown of last year’s club, as well as all of the new faces fro 2017 can be found here.

World Baseball Classic Underway
Team Canada begins play in “Pool C” of the 2017 World Baseball Classic against the Dominican Republic this Thursday (March 9th). The other half of the four-team pool is made up of Team USA and Team Colombia, and will play out their bracket at Marlins Park in Miami, Florida.
Team Israel has been the early surprise, winning a pair of games on Monday when the tournament kicked off. Blake Gailen hit third in the lineup during Israel’s 2-1 win over Team Korea. Gailen’s .406 batting average for the Lincoln Saltdogs in 2011 remains an American Association single-season record. Later that day, current Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks right-hander Tyler Herron worked a scoreless frame in Israel’s 15-7 thumping of Chinese Taipei.
The Saltdogs were also well-represented in Team Netherlands’ 5-0 shutout over Korea on Tuesday. Infielder Curt Smith, catcher Dashenko Ricardo, and outfielder Randolph Oduber were in the starting lineup, while right-handed pitcher Shairon Martis pitched a scoreless seventh. All four have been signed to contracts with Lincoln for the 2017 season. Former Lincoln right-hander Kuo Hua Lo made an appearance for Chinese Tapei in Monday’s game against Israel.
RedHawks Trade Veteran Starter
The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks traded veteran, right-handed starting pitcher Taylor Stanton to the Saltdogs in exchange for outfielder Robbie Kuzdale on Tuesday. Over the last four years, Stanton has been one of the top starters in the American Association, compiling a 3.80 ERA in 77 starts and logging 110.0 or more innings in each of those seasons. In 2013, Stanton led the league with a 2.43 ERA and was named American Association Pitcher of the Year. Stanton owns a 3.84 ERA in 10 career starts against Winnipeg.
Kuzdale is considered a plus defender, and has reached double digit stolen bases in each of his three American Association campaigns.

Here is an excerpt from a Goldeyes’ newsletter from the team’s inaugural season in 1994:
Along with rising temperatures and melting snow, a sure sign of spring is the staging of Northern League tryout camps, the first of which was held at Terry Park in Fort Myers, Florida on Monday and Tuesday of this week.
On Monday morning, Northern League Director of Scouting Nick Belmonte put the 100 players through their paces with a number of different drills. At the end of the day the field was cut to 30.
On Tuesday, the remaining field was split into two teams and a game was held. At the game’s conclusion, a draft was conducted which resulted in three players being chosen. Coach Simunic, who held the fourth pick in the draft, opted to pass, because any player drafted in this phase must be on the opening day roster, and stay there for a minimum of two weeks.
In the second phase of the draft, Doug chose right-hander DAVE ALLEN, a 25 year old 6’3″ 220 pounder out of Rochester, New York. Dave pitched for four years in the Astros and Phillies organizations, last seeing action at A level Burlington (Houston) in 1991. The Goldeyes will be following Dave closely over the next two months since they have until April 30 to sign him or he again becomes a free agent.
