WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (15-10) lost 4-2 to the Texas AirHogs at Shaw Park on Wednesday night.
With the game tied at 2-2, Ryan Wagner and Levi Scott opened the top of the eighth inning with back-to-back singles. After Brian Ragira struck out, Jake Taylor grounded a soft single into left field that scored Wagner with the go-ahead run.
Trevor Sealey hit a one-out, bloop double to right-centre in the top of the ninth and took third base two batters later on a single to left from Wagner. Scott followed with a two-out, RBI single to left that scored Sealey to make it 4-2.
Wes Darvill led off the bottom of the ninth with an infield single to bring the tying run to the plate before AirHogs’ reliever Josh Blanco retired the next three hitters to earn his second save of the year.
The Goldeyes took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Reggie Abercrombie reached on a leadoff infield single and took third when Shawn Pleffner ripped a single to right-centre. Mason Katz followed with a comebacker to AirHogs’ starting pitcher Michael Freeman. On the play, Abercrombie stayed in a rundown long enough for Pleffner to advance to third and Katz to second before being tagged out. After David Rohm walked to load the bases, Darvill drove in Pleffner on a fielder’s choice groundball to second. Alixon Suarez then plated Katz with a line drive single to right.
Scott led off the top of the fourth with a double to right-centre, advanced to third on a groundball to first from Ragira, and scored on a wild pitch that cut the Goldeyes’ lead to 2-1. Later in the inning, Cameron Monger drew a two-out walk, stole second, and scored the tying run on a single to centre from Beamer Weems.
TJ Bozeman (2-1) earned the win in relief for the AirHogs, pitching two scoreless innings over the seventh and eighth.
Victor Capellan (0-2) took the loss for the Goldeyes, allowing one earned run in the top of the eighth.
Goldeyes’ starting pitcher Zack Dodson took a no-decision, allowing two earned runs on eight hits in seven innings. Dodson walked one and struck out four.
Freeman also took a no-decision, allowing two earned runs on seven hits in six innings. Freeman walked two and struck out six.
Andrew Sohn singled in the bottom of the seventh and has hit safely in eight games in a row.
The series concludes Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Mikey O’Brien (2-2, 6.00) takes on right-hander Tyler Bremer (1-2, 4.79).
