KANSAS CITY, KS – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (32-27) lost 5-4 to the Kansas City T-Bones at CommunityAmerica Ballpark on Friday night.
With the Goldeyes leading 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning, the T-Bones rallied for two runs to win the game. With one out, Tyler Massey dragged a bunt to the right side of the infield for a single. After Robert Tasin (0-1) relieved Eric Eadington , Jake Blackwood pulled a single through the hole on the left side. A wild pitch moved Massey to third and Blackwood to second, setting up a groundball RBI single to left from Anthony Gallas that scored Massey with the tying run. Jimmy Mojica won the game with a hard single just inside the third base bag that scored Blackwood.
The Goldeyes jumped out to an early lead when Reggie Abercrombie hit a two-out, two-run home run to left-centre field in the top of the first.
Winnipeg added two more in the top of the second. Jacob Rogers led off with a single to left. Two batters later, Rogers went to third on Wes Darvill’s single down the right field line. Carlton Tanabe drove in Rogers on a fielder’s choice groundball to second. Tanabe eventually scored on a two-out, RBI single to centre from Maikol Gonzalez to make it 4-0.
Kansas City started chipping away against Goldeyes’ starter Ethan Carnes in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs and no one on base, Massey singled to right, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on a line drive single to right from Blackwood.
In the sixth, Brett Wiley singled to right with two outs. Massey was next and hit a two-run homer down the right field line to cut the lead to 4-3.
Carnes took a no-decision, allowing three earned runs on five hits in six innings. Carnes walked none and struck out two.
Tasin took the loss in relief for Winnipeg. Johnny Shuttlesworth worked two scoreless in the eighth and ninth and was credited with the win.
Jared Messer started for the T-Bones (27-33) and also took a no-decision. Messer allowed four earned runs on nine hits in six innings. Messer walked three and struck out four.
Brandon Shimo pitched a perfect seventh in relief of Carnes.
Darvill had two hits, including a double in the fifth that was the 500th hit of his professional career.
The series continues Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Mikey O’Brien (6-4, 4.38) faces right-hander David Holman (3-4, 5.33).
