WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (56-36) beat the Sioux Falls Canaries 14-8 at Shaw Park on Saturday evening.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the second, Reggie Abercrombie lined a single to right field leading off. After Shawn Pleffner doubled down the right field line, David Bergin worked an eight-pitch walk to load the bases with no outs. Wes Davrill cut the Canaries’ lead to 3-1 with an RBI groundout to shortstop. Mason Katzwalked to re-load the bases, and was followed by an Andrew Sohn walk that pulled the Goldeyes within 3-2. Casey Turgeon then ripped a single through the right side that scored Bergin and Katz to give the Goldeyes the lead. David Rohm capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to left that made it 5-3.
In the bottom of the third, Pleffner singled to centre off the glove of a sliding Dan Motl. Bergin lined a single to left, and the Goldeyes stretched the lead to 6-3 when Darvill drove in Pleffner with a single through the right side. After Katz walked, Sohn drew his second bases loaded walk of the night to force home Bergin with the Goldeyes’ seventh run. Turgeon clubed a three-run double to centre field that made it 10-3. Rohm plated Turgeon with an RBI double down the right field line.
Brett Marr singled home Motl in the top of the fourth to cut the Goldeyes’ lead to 11-4. In the top of the fifth, Patrick Fiala singled with one out and scored from first on a double to right-centre from Blake Schmit. Tyler Wolfe followed with a two-run home run.
The Goldeyes re-extended their lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Pleffner drew an eight-pitch leadoff walk. Bergin was then hit by a pitch, and the Goldeyes loaded the bases with no outs when Darvill lined a single to right. Katz reached on an infield single that scored Pleffner with the Goldeyes’ 12th run. Sohn drew another bases loaded walk, his third of the night, to make it 13-7, while Rohm added a sacrifice fly later in the inning.
Motl doubled home Schmit with the Canaries’ eighth and final run in the top of the seventh.
Mitchell Lambson (7-3) earned the win in relief, allowing one earned run on three hits over two and two-thirds innings.
Troy Marks (3-8) started and took the loss for the Canaries, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on six hits in two and one-third innings. Marks walked three and struck out two.
Evan Rutckyj pitched scoreless baseball over the eighth and ninth to close out the game. Rutckyj struck out two.
Burt Reynolds hit a solo home run with one out in the top of the first inning to give the Canaries an early 1-0 lead. Sioux Falls added two more in the second on a Motl RBI groundball and a two-out error charged to Sohn.
Edwin Carl started for the Goldeyes and took a no-decision, allowing seven runs, six earned, on eight hits in four and one-third innings. Carl walked four and struck out two.
The Goldeyes drew nine walks in the win, seven of which either came around to score or forced in a run. Turgeon finished with five RBI, while eight different Goldeyes had at least one hit. Rohm had three RBI. Pleffner, Bergin, and Sohn each scored three runs. The Goldeyes saw 191 total pitches on offence over eight innings, and scored six of their 14 runs without a base hit.
The series concludes Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Zack Dodson (5-6, 5.10) faces right-hander Miles Nordgren (5-6, 4.23).
