WINNIPEG, MB – Winnipeg Goldeyes’ left-handed pitcher Kevin McGovern has been named the American Association’s Pitcher of the Week for August 15th-21st.

McGovern was brilliant last week, winning both of his starts and not allowing a run over a combined 14.0 innings pitched.  On Wednesday, McGovern pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout in the opener of a double header against the St. Paul Saints.  McGovern carried a no-hitter into the fifth, and finished the game with six strikeouts.  McGovern bested that performance yesterday afternoon at Sioux City, holding the Explorers to just one hit over seven shutout frames.  The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native struck out eight batters to run his season total to 102, which marks the third consecutive year in which he has reached triple digit strikeouts.  McGoevrn’s effort on Sunday also came on three days of rest.

McGovern has allowed two hits or less while throwing at least 7.0 innings in three of his last four starts dating back to a complete game two-hitter at Gary SouthShore on August 6th.  The 27-year-old currently ranks tied for second in the American Association in strikeouts and has the 10th lowest opponent’s batting average in the league (.246).

It marks the fourth league honour this season for the Goldeyes.  Edwin Carl was named Pitcher of the Week for June 6th-12th.  Reggie Abercrombie earned Batter of the Week accolades for July 11th-17th, and was later named the league’s Batter of the Month for July.

McGovern and the Goldeyes open a four-game series tonight against the rival Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Shaw Park.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
