FARGO, ND – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (52-34) beat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 4-3 at Newman Outdoor Field on Sunday afternoon.
Tied at 3-3 in the top of the eighth inning, Casey Turgeon drew a full count, leadoff walk. After Josh Romanski flied out to right field, right-hander Trey McNutt relieved left-hander Anthony Pacillo. On the first pitch to Reggie Abercrombie, Turgeon stole second base and then advanced to third when Abercrombie grounded out to second. On a 2-2 count, Shawn Pleffner ripped a single through the right side to score Turgeon with the go-ahead run.
Evan Rutckyj relieved Mitchell Lambson in the bottom of the eighth and struck out Keury de la Cruz leading off. Victor Capellan took over for Rutckyj and recorded the final two outs of the inning to keep the Goldeyes ahead 4-3.
In the bottom of the ninth, Abercrombie lost sight of a flyball from Devan Ahart, but recovered in time to make a falling catch for the leadoff out. After Yhoxian Medina lined out to centre, Ryan Chaffee struck out Chris Grayson looking to end the game for his 18th save of the year.
“Another really good ballgame,” said Goldeyes’ hitting coach Tom Vaeth. “Very exciting to watch. These are good games to have late in the season, because this is what playoff baseball is like. Charle gave us a really good start and the boys just kept battling. Romanski got us on the board, and David absolutely crushed that ball. Great for him getting his 20th in this league. Casey with the big leadoff walk getting us started in the eighth, and Pleffner turning on one when they tried to pound him inside.”
Lambson (6-3) earned the win in relief, allowing one earned run over two innings.
Pacillo (0-1) was charged with the loss for the RedHawks.
Josh Mazzola and Charlie Valerio opened the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back singles. After Keury de la Cruz sacrificed the runners ahead, Goldeyes’ starting pitcher Charle Rosario struck out Trever Adams for the second out. KD Kang then singled home Mazzola and Valerio on a groundball through the right side that gave the RedHawks a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Romanski lined a solo home run off the right field foul pole that cut Fargo-Moorhead’s lead in half. Abercrombie then reached on a bloop single that landed just fair inside the right field line. After Pleffner flied out to left, David Bergin hit a two-out, two-run home run to the left of straightaway centre field, more than 410 feet from home plate.
Brandon Tierney led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to right centre. Ahart sacrificed Tierney to third and reached first on an error charged to Lambson. After Medina popped out to shortstop, Grayson lined a single to left-centre that scored Tierney with the tying run. Lambson then struck out Mazzola and Valerio back-to-back to keep the game tied.
Rosario took a no-decision, allowing two earned runs on five hits over five innings. Rosario walked four, struck out six, and was pitching on three days of rest.
“Charle battled,” said Vaeth. “He didn’t have his best stuff today, but he didn’t buckle or give in to the hitters. Just a really nice start from him.”
Tyler Herron started for the RedHawks and also took a no-decision, allowing three earned runs on seven hits over seven innings. Herron walked one, struck out eight, and was also working on three days of rest.
The series concludes Monday night at 7:02 p.m. Edwin Carl (8-3, 4.10) takes on left-hander Will Solomon (4-4, 5.09). All the action can be heard locally on 93.7 FM CJNU and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca
