FARGO, ND – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (13-8) lost 7-5 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Newman Outdoor Field on Saturday evening.
Mason Katz led off the top of the second with a line drive single to centre field. Wes Darvill followed with a towering, two-run home run down the right field line to drive in the first runs of the game.
The RedHawks (14-9) answered back in the bottom half when KD Kang drew a leadoff walk and scored two batters later on a Kes Carter double to left-centre.
In the bottom of the third, Mitch Delfino led off with a single to centre and advanced to second when Mike Schwartz walked. After Josh Mazzola’s deep flyball to right field moved the runners to second and third, Kang tied the game with a single to right that scored Delfino. Ryan Pineda beat out a fielder’s choice groundball at shortstop to bring in Schwartz with the go-ahead run. Carter capped the inning with a two-out, two-run homer to right-centre.
Josh Romanski lined a one-out, solo home run to right field in the top of the fifth to pull the Goldeyes within 5-3. The homer extended Romanski’s hitting streak to 12 games. Fargo-Moorhead responded in the bottom of the inning when Schwartz scored on a two-out wild pitch.
Shawn Pleffner led off the top of the sixth with a triple to centre and scored the Goldeyes’ fourth run when Katz lifted a sacrifice fly to right. The triple was Pleffner’s 500th career base hit. Delfino hit an RBI single to right in the bottom of the inning to extend the RedHawks’ lead to 7-4.
The Goldeyes were able to bring the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth against RedHawks’ closer Casey Weathers. Casio Grider drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a two-out, RBI double to right-centre from David Bergin. Weathers bounced back to strike out the side and earned his fourth save of the year.
RedHawks’ starter Cesilio Pimentel (5-0) picked up the win, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in five and two-thirds innings. Pimentel walked two and struck out four.
Mikey O’Brien (2-2) took the loss for the Goldeyes, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits in five and one-third. O’Brien walked four and struck out two.
Right-hander Brandon Quintero pitched two shutout innings with two strikeouts in his Goldeyes’ debut. Josh Laxer recorded a pair of outs in relief during the bottom of the sixth.
Alixon Suarez threw out RedHawks’ shortstop Yhoxian Medina on a steal attempt of second base in both the sixth and eighth innings.
Eight different Goldeyes had at least one hit, while all nine reached base at least once. Bergin, Pleffner, and Darvill each had two hits.
