WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed outfielder Stefan Sabol on Monday afternoon.
Sabol played in the New York Mets’ organization last season for the Double-A Eastern League’s Binghamton Mets. The Aliso Viejo, California native batted .229 with 12 doubles, five home runs, 24 RBI, and 27 walks in 72 games played. Defensively, Sabol recorded six outfield assists during 61 contests in right field.
“I’m pleased to add Stefan to the club,” said Goldeyes’ manager Rick Forney. “He can play multiple positions, runs well for a big guy, has some pop in his bat, and has Double-A experience with the Mets’ organization. I think Stefan has the ability to do really well in our league.”
Sabol was originally drafted by the Mets in the 17th round in 2012 out of Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California. In five professional seasons, the 6-foot, 230-pound Sabol is a .225 hitter while averaging 63 runs scored, 31 doubles, 12 home runs, 68 RBI, 15 stolen bases, and 79 walks per 162 games played. Sabol appeared in two Major League spring training contests with the Mets in 2016, and the 25-year-old outfielder has been part of a playoff team in four of his first five seasons as a professional.
Sabol led the Savannah Sand Gnats to the Low-A South Atlantic League championship in 2013. A right-handed hitter and fielder, Sabol led the South Atlantic League with eight postseason RBI in six contests as Savannah won its first championship in 17 years. Sabol accounted for the only runs in a 2-0, title-clinching win versus the Hagerstown Suns on September 13th.
The Goldeyes now have 20 players under contract for the 2017 season. American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during spring training, which begins May 6th.
Notes: Sabol played one season at the University of Oregon (Eugene, Oregon) in 2011 before transferring to Orange Coast College…Sabol played in the prestigious Cape Cod League during the summer of 2011, hitting .299 for the Cotuit Kettleers…Sabol’s father, Rob, played baseball at Long Beach State University (Long Beach, California), while his younger brother, Blake, currently plays at the University of Southern California (Los Angeles, California)…Sabol is also a cousin of former NFL safety Troy Polamalu and current WWE professional wrestler “Samoa Joe”
