WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed right-handed pitchers Zach Nuding and Joel Effertz on Thursday morning.

Nuding pitched for three affiliates in the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim organization last year, including 14 appearances for the Triple-A Pacific Coast League’s Salt Lake Bees.  The Fort Worth, Texas native combined for a 4-10 record with a 5.20 ERA in 19 starts and nine relief outings.  In 110.2 innings pitched, Nuding walked 41 while striking out 76.  Nuding, who will be 27 on Opening Night, posted a 2.97 ERA in 39.1 innings during his time with the Double-A Texas League’s Arkansas Travelers.

“I’m very pleased to announce the additions of Zach and Joel,” said Goldeyes’ manager Rick Forney.  “Zach is a very durable veteran arm that has a great track record of success.  I think he really makes our deep rotation even better.”

Nuding is 36-40 with two saves and a 4.13 ERA in seven professional seasons over 157 games, 109 of them as a starting pitcher.  The 6-foot-4, 245-pound right-hander was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 30th round in 2010 out of Weatherford College (Weatherford, Texas).  Nuding has soaked up 100.0 or more innings in five of the last six seasons.  The lone exception came in 2015 when Nuding pitched primarily in relief, and had a 3.32 ERA for the Double-A Eastern League’s Akron RubberDucks (Cleveland Indians’ organization).  Nuding has struck out 491 against 241 walks in 649.2 career innings, and has compiled a 3.49 ERA in 291.1 frames at the Double-A level.

Effertz pitched at three levels of the Miami Marlins’ organization in 2016.  The Ladysmith, Wisconsin native struck out 15 batters in 25.1 total innings.  Effertz was drafted by the Marlins in the 28th round in 2013 out of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (La Crosse, Wisconsin).  The 26-year-old is 2-7 with one save and a 4.93 ERA in three professional seasons.  Effertz has struck out 61 and walked just 24 in 76.2 career innings, and reached the Double-A level in 2014.  Prior to being drafted, the 6-foot-3, 235-pound Effertz was 5-4 with a 2.87 ERA during his senior season at Wisconsin-La Crosse.

“I had the opportunity to see Joel throw in Arizona a few weeks ago, and walked away very impressed,” said Forney.  “I reached out to former Goldeyes’ pitching coach Brendan Sagara who had very high praise for Joel.  Brendan was very influential, and we are very appreciative of his help.  I really think Joel has the chance to be one of the best rookie classified arms in the American Association.”

The Goldeyes now have 22 players under contract for the 2017 season.  American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during spring training, which begins May 6th.
