WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (61-38) lost 10-1 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Shaw Park on Sunday afternoon.
Josh Mazzola led off the top of the second with a double down the left field line. After Charlie Valerio grounded out to shortstop, Trever Adams singled to centre and advanced Mazzola to third. The RedHawks took a 1-0 lead when Keury de la Cruz reached on a throwing error on a groundball to shortstop. KD Kang made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to right.
In the bottom of the third, Mason Katz and Andrew Sohn hit back-to-back, one-out singles. Casey Turgeon followed with a single to centre that scored Katz and cut the RedHawks’ lead to 2-1.
Brandon Tierney singled through the left side leading off the top of the fifth and took second on a wild pitch. Devan Ahart moved Tierney to third with a groundball to second, and the RedHawks stretched the lead to 3-1 on a Yhoxian Medina sacrifice fly.
Tierney led off the top of the seventh with a solo home run down the right field line. After Ahart and Medina walked, Kenny Mathews relieved Goldeyes’ starter Zack Dodson. Chris Grayson grounded into a fielder’s choice that moved Ahart to third. Mazzola then hit a sacrifice fly to left that made it 5-1.
With runners on first and second with one out in the top of the eighth, Kang singled through the right side to score Adams. With Tierney at the plate, de la Cruz stole third which led to a throwing error that brought home the RedHawks’ seventh and eighth runs.
Mazzola and Valerio hit back-to-back solo home runs with one out in the top of the ninth to provide the game’s final margin.
RedHawks’ starting pitcher Tyler Herron (9-3) earned the win with a complete game. Herron allowed one earned run on five hits over nine innings. Herron walked none and struck out nine.
Dodson (5-7) took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits in six-plus innings. Dodson walked two and struck out three.
The regular season concludes Monday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Charle Rosario (10-5, 3.09) starts for Winnipeg.
The Goldeyes begin postseason play on Wednesday, September 6th against either the RedHawks or the Lincoln Saltdogs. The Goldeyes will play Games One and Two of the American Association Division Series on the road before returning home for Game Three on Saturday, September 9th at 6:05 p.m. The “if necessary” Games Four and Five will also be played at Shaw Park on Sunday, September 10th (4:05 p.m.) and Monday, September 11th (7:05 p.m.).
