ST.PAUL, MN — The Winnipeg Goldeyes (18-18) lost 5-4 to the St. Paul Saints at CHS Field on Sunday evening.
Tied 4-4, Victor Capellan replaced Mitchell Lambson for the Winnipeg Goldeyes in the bottom of the eighth. Capellan struck out back-to-back batters in the bottom of the inning, and retired the entire side in the ninth to remain perfect through two and two-third innings.
In the bottom of the eleventh, Brady Shoemaker came to the plate against Goldeyes’ closer Ryan Chaffee. Shoemaker hit a two-out walk-off home run to right field, his third home run of the series and second of the night.
Kenneth Frosch (3-0) earned the win in relief for the Saints, while Chaffee (0-2) took the loss in relief for the Goldeyes.
Goldeyes’ starter Mikey O’Brien (3-2) took the no-decision allowing four runs on five hits, walking one and striking out five.
Andrew Sohn led off the first with a single deep down the right field line and advanced to second on a Ryan Zimmerman wild pitch. David Rohm walked and Josh Romanski hit an RBI single over the head of Jon Kristoffersen that scored Sohn.
The Saints tied the game in the bottom of the second off an Anthony Gallas solo-shot home run.
In the top of the third, Rohm reached first on a fielders choice, Romanski doubled to centre field off the glove of Tim Colwell, and Reggie Abercrombie hit an RBI ground-out down the middle that scored Rohm to retake the lead 2-1.
The Goldeyes extended their lead in the top of the fourth. Wes Darvill singled to shallow right field with two outs, Jordan Ebert singled and advanced Darvill who scored one-batter later off an RBI single from Sohn.
Shoemaker hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth, that cut the Goldeyes’ lead to 3-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, Tony Thomas hit an inside-the-park home run deep over the head of Abercrombie in centre field. Maxx Garrett walked and scored after back-to-back errors by the Goldeyes defence. A line drive putout by Romanski to home plate and a caught foul-tip behind the back of Mason Katz limited the Saints to two runs in the inning.
Darvill singled to right field in the top of the sixth. Ebert reached first on a missed double play by the Saints. Ebert took second on a Brandon Peterson wild pitch and tied the game off an RBI fly-ball from Rohm.
In the bottom of the seventh, Thomas doubled to right field, Garrett reached first on a bunt that put runners on first and third with no outs. Lambson replaced starter Mikey O’Brien on the mound. Lambson stranded the both runners on base after registering two outs off back-to-back squeeze attempts by Kristoffersen and Tanner Vavra including a toss to home plate to putout Thomas, one-batter later Lambson forced a ground-out to second by Danny Oh.
The Goldeyes return home on Tuesday, June 27th when they host game one of a three game series versus the Gary SouthShore RailCats.
