WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (46-32) beat the Wichita Wingnuts 11-9 at Shaw Park on Saturday evening.
Trailing 6-1 in the bottom of the third inning, Jordan Ebert led off with a single to right-centre and took second when Andrew Sohn lined a single to centre. David Rohm followed with a two-run double down the left field line that cut the Wingnuts’ lead to 6-3. Two batters later, Reggie Abercrombie reached on a throwing error by third baseman TJ Mittelstaedt that set up second and third with one out. Shawn Pleffner made it 6-4 with a groundout to first that scored Rohm. David Bergin drove in Abercrombie with a double to left-centre that pulled the Goldeyes within one.
In the bottom of the fourth, Ebert again sparked the Goldeyes with a leadoff double down the left field line. Two batters later, Rohm tied the game with a double to the wall in left-centre that scored Ebert. Josh Romanksi singled on a sharp grounder up the middle that scored Rohm to give Winnipeg a 7-6 lead. After Abercrombie singled through the left side, Pleffner slugged a three-run homer to right-centre.
“Really good offence tonight,” said Goldeyes’ manager Rick Forney. “We didn’t do much last night offensively. Today, we got some really good swings on pitches left in the middle of the plate. Their bullpen did a really good job today. Josh getting that home run to give us a little separation in the eighth was a big boost.”
After the Wingnuts put runners on first and second in the top of the fifth, Evan Rutckyj relieved starting pitcher Zack Dodson. Rutckyj worked through the inning without allowing any runs, and kept the Goldeyes in front 10-6.
The Wingnuts rallied for three runs in the sixth to make it a one-run game. With first and second and on out, Mittelstaedt doubled down the left field line to score Christian Stringer. Matt Chavez cut Winnipeg’s lead to 10-8 with a single to left. Two batters later, Richard Prigatano dropped down a two-out, bunt base hit to third that scored Mittelstaedt with the Wingnuts’ ninth run. Kenny Mathews then relieved Rutckyj and retired Brennen Salgado on a groundout to shortstop to strand the tying and go-ahead runs on base.
Victor Capellan (2-4) took over in the seventh and worked two perfect innings to earn the win. In the eight, Capellan struck out the heart of Wichita’s lineup in order.
“He’s a real weapon out there,” said Forney regarding Capellan. “He’s as good as they come in this league. He’s got deception in his delivery, velocity, a good slider. When he has good command, forget about it. He’s going to give you a really uncomfortable at bat.”
In the bottom of the eighth, Romanski provided an insurance run with a two-out, solo homer to right-centre.
Ryan Chaffee took over in the top of the ninth and struck out two during a perfect inning to earn his 16th save.
Brent Clevlen gave Wichita the early lead with a three-run home run to left field in the top of the first.
The Goldeyes scratched out a run in the bottom of the second on a Wes Darvill sacrifice fly.
The Wingnuts re-extended their lead with three runs in the top of the third. Medina drew a bases loaded walk, while Prigatano plated a run on a groundball double play. Salgado capped the inning with a bloop double down the left field line.
Dodson took a no-decision, allowing six earned runs on seven hits in four innings. Dodson walked five and struck out three.
Tim Brown (2-3) started for Wichita and took the loss, allowing 10 runs, eight earned, on 11 hits in three and one-third innings. Brown walked one and struck out three.
Pleffner finished with four RBI, while Bergin tied a Goldeyes’ single-game record with three doubles. Bergin also had three doubles on June 28th versus Gary SouthShore. Ebert finished with three hits.
