WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes acquired right-handed pitcher Victor Capellan from the Joplin Blasters in exchange for cash on Friday.
Capellan (pronounced CAP-ee-ahn) is 2-1 with seven saves and a 2.37 ERA this season. A sidearm right-hander, Capellan is tied for ninth in the American Association with 32 appearances, and has struck out 44 batters in 38.0 innings pitched while allowing just 22 hits.
Last season, Capellan finished second in the league with 53 appearances and posted a 3.34 ERA with 77 strikeouts in 56.2 innings for the Blasters.
A native of Monte Cristi in the Dominican Republic, Capellan is in his ninth season of professional baseball. The 29-year-old is 18-19 in his career with 15 saves and a 4.09 ERA over 260 appearances, all in relief. Capellan has averaged 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings as a professional. Capellan originally signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks as an international free agent in 2007, and reached the Triple-A level with the Reno Aces in 2012.
Right-handed pitcher Kyle Lotzkar has announced his retirement from professional baseball. Lotzkar was signed on June 16th and was 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in 18 relief appearances.
Capellan will be in uniform tonight when the Goldeyes play the second game of a four-game series against the Wichita Wingnuts.
