The Winnipeg Goldeyes (17-16) picked up their first shutout of 2016 and third rubber match victory over the Lincoln Saltdogs (18-15) this month with a 3-0 win at Haymarket Park on Thursday night.

“It was a really good, entertaining game,” Goldeyes hitting coach Tom Vaeth said. “It was a fun one to be a part of. We had two pitchers on top of their game who battled throughout.”

Winnipeg starter Edwin Carl (3-2, 4.57) struck out six and gave up five hits without surrendering a walk through eight shutout innings for the win.

“He mixed his pitches well,” Vaeth said about Carl. “His change-up tonight was probably the best he’s thrown all season.”

Right-hander Jailen Peguero pitched the scoreless top ninth and gave up one hit. Lincoln starter Lindsey Caughel (3-2, 1.46) struck out nine but gave up one run on four hits through seven innings for the loss.

Reggie Abercrombie returned to the Goldeyes lineup after missing the last two games with an upper body injury. After Jacob Rogers hit a leadoff single to start the second, Abercrombie doubled to drive him home and score what would be the winning run.

“That was a big league swing,” Vaeth said. “It was nice to get on top early, and that proved to be a big run.”

The Saltdogs held the Goldeyes to only one hit — a single from David Rohm that extended his safe hitting streak to seven games — through the next five innings, until Josh Romanski singled in the eighth. Five pitches later, Rohm drove his third home run of the season over the left field wall to give the Goldeyes a 3-0 lead.

Lincoln fought back in the bottom ninth, when Rene Leveret singled and pinch runner Brandon Jacobs reached second on an error. Luis Alen took first on a fielder’s choice, but Carlton Tanabe threw out pinch runner Freddy Flores to close out the Goldeyes’ 2-1 series win.

The Fish will continue their road trip with a four-game series against the St. Paul Saints. Right-hander Duke von Schamann (2-3, 5.73) will face off against Mark Hamburger (5-0, 3.38) tomorrow night at 7.
