ST. PAUL, MN – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (55-41) dropped a pitcher’s duel 1-0 to the St. Paul Saints (59-37) at CHS Field on Thursday night.

With one out and runners on the corners in the bottom ninth, the Goldeyes elected to intentionally walk Alonzo Harris and load the bases. Tony Caldwell then hit a sacrifice fly to centre field to drive in Tony Thomas from third to end the game.

With the win, the Saints clinch an American Association postseason berth, while the Goldeyes are now only a half game ahead of the Laredo Lemurs in the wild card race.

Winnipeg starter Mikey O’Brien (10-4, 4.34) held the Saints scoreless through his seven full innings of work, striking out nine batters, walking five and allowing six hits for a no-decision. Cameron McVey pitched two outs in the eighth, and Eric Eadington (4-5, 3.13) gave up the only run of the game and suffered the loss.

Robert Coe (11-3, 4.19) held the Goldeyes to three hits through seven innings for a no-decision. Caleb Thielbar (5-2, 2.42) gave up two hits in the scoreless eighth and ninth for the win.

While neither team scored until the final half inning, both had their share of close calls.

In the top third with one on and one out, Thomas made a leaping catch to rob Carlton Tanabe of a likely base hit, but Tanabe helped return the favour in the next inning. Reggie Abercrombie made a long throw from centre field to the plate as Angelo Songco ran into Tanabe, who tagged him out at the plate to prevent the Saints from taking the lead.

The Goldeyes have now played 28 one-run contests this season, and 24 of Winnipeg’s 96 games have been decided in the winning team’s final at-bat.

The Goldeyes will return home to open their final series of the regular season on Friday night at 7 against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Right-hander Edwin Carl (9-6, 4.58) will start for Winnipeg. The RedHawks have not yet announced their starting pitcher.
