WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (54-36) lost 8-7 in 11 innings to the Sioux City Explorers at Shaw Park on Thursday night.
Tied at 3-3 in the top of the 11th inning, Daniel Jackson led off and reached first base on an error. After Tony Campana reached on a sacrifice bunt that resulted in an error, Jayce Ray laid down a sacrifice that set up second and third with one out. Michael Lang was intentionally walked to load the bases and the Explorers took a 4-3 lead on an RBI single to left from Tyler Ogle. After Eudor Garcia struck out looking, Nate Samson worked a bases loaded walk to force home the Explorers’ fifth run. Tanner Vavra singled up the middle to drive in Lang and Ogle, and the Explorers made it 8-3 when Samson scored on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the 11th, David Bergin drew a one-out walk and took second on a Wes Davrill single to left. Jordan Ebert doubled to left-centre off the glove of a diving Campana to score Bergin. Mason Katz hit a three-run home run to left-centre that pulled the Goldeyes within one run. After Casey Turgeon walked to put the tying run on first, Bubby Rossman relieved PJ Francescon and recorded the final two outs to pick up his first save of the year.
Francescon (4-3) earned the win in relief, while Kenny Mathews (3-2) took the loss for Winnipeg.
The Explorers had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the 10th when Samson doubled to right-centre with two outs and scored on a single to right from Dre Gleason.
The Goldeyes rallied in the bottom half when Katz led off with a single. Turgeon sacrificed Katz to second, and the Goldeyes tied the game two batters later when Josh Romanski singled through the left side.
Sioux City took a 1-0 lead in the first. With second and third and one out, Ogle lined a single to left field that scored Ray. Garcia then reached on an infield single that loaded the bases, but Goldeyes’ starter Mikey O’Brien limited the damage when Samson lined into an inning-ending double play started by Darvill at shortstop.
Turgeon drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first, took second on a wild pitch, advanced to third when David Rohm lined out to right, and scored the tying run on a Romanski sacrifice fly to centre.
Samson singled home Ray with two outs in the top of the third to give the Explorers a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Bergin drew a one-out walk, took second and third on a pair of wild pitches, and then scored the tying run on a two-out, infield single from Ebert.
O’Brien took a no-decision, allowing two earned runs on 11 hits over seven innings. O’Brien walked two and struck out two.
Keith Picht started for Sioux City and also took a no-decision, allowing two earned runs on two hits in five innings. Picht walked four and struck out five.
Mitchell Lambson worked two scoreless innings in relief of O’Brien. Ebert finished with three hits.
The Goldeyes open a three-game series against the Sioux Falls Canaries at Shaw Park on Friday night.
