SIOUX CITY, IA — The Winnipeg Goldeyes (50-34) dropped the first of a three-game series 16-1 against the Sioux City Explorers (45-39) on Friday Night at Lewis & Clark Park.
The loss leaves Winnipeg with only a thee-game advantage over the Laredo Lemurs in the American Association wild card race after the Lemurs won their series opener against the Joplin Blasters.
The Explorers’ bats came out hot early. Sioux City scored two in the first on separate RBI ground outs and again in the second on a sacrifice fly to right field. They added one on a wild pitch in the third and another on a Tim Colwell double to take a 5-0 lead.
Winnipeg’s lone run of the night came across the plate in the bottom fourth, when Reggie Abercrombie hit a two-out solo home run to put the Goldeyes on the board.
The Explorers fired back with five runs in the bottom fourth, extending their lead to 10-1. After a scoreless fifth, Sioux City’s hitters combined for six more runs in the sixth. Neither team scored again through the final innings, and the Explorers took the 16-1 victory.
Left-hander Ethan Carnes (7-3, 4.47) took the loss for Winnipeg after he gave up 15 runs (13 earned) on 14 hits through the first five innings. Rob Tasin allowed the final Explorers run. Winston Abreu, who signed with the Goldeyes before the game, pitched the scoreless seventh.
Ridge Hoopii-Haslam made his first professional pitching appearance in the bottom eight. He gave up one hit but maintains a perfect ERA.
