ST. PAUL, MN – Winnipeg Goldeyes outfielder David Rohm was named the 2016 American Association All-Star MVP after he and fellow Goldeyes outfielder Willie Cabrera helped the North to a 6-1 win over the South in Tuesday night’s American Association All-Star Game at CHS Field in St. Paul.
Rohm played first base and went 2-for-4 with a single, a double, a stolen base and two RBIs, while Cabrera scored a run and drew a walk.
The North – comprised of players from the American Association North and Central Divisions and led by Sioux City Explorers manager Steve Montgomery – took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom first, scoring one on a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded and two on Rohm’s double to left field.
After two scoreless innings, Cabrera led off the bottom fourth with a four-pitch walk. Rohm singled to advance him to third, and the Gary SouthShore RailCats’ Jose Gonzalez singled to drive Cabrera home. Gonzalez later scored on an single from the Sioux City Explorers’ Nate Samson to give the North a 5-0 lead.
The South – made up of players from the American Association South Division and the Can-Am League and led by the Laredo Lemurs’ Pete Incaviglia – put up their lone run in the sixth, but the North answered with a Luis Alen (Lincoln Saltdogs) RBI double in the eighth to take the game 6-1.
The North sent nine pitchers to the mound, and the St. Paul Saints’ Mark Hamburger took the win after he struck out one in a scoreless first. Ten pitchers represented the South, but the Laredo Lemurs’ Ryan Beckman took the loss after surrendering three runs on two hits in the first.
