WINNIPEG, MB – Winnipeg Goldeyes’ right-handed pitcher Edwin Carl has been named the American Association’s Pitcher of the Week for June 6th-12th.
Carl was 1-0 with a 0.69 ERA in two starts last week. The Farmington, New Mexico native struck out 17 batters in just 13.0 innings pitched. Last Tuesday at Sioux City, Carl fanned seven Explorers while allowing one earned run on four hits over seven innings. The 27-year-old right-hander picked up the victory as the Goldeyes won 11-1. Yesterday afternoon, Carl helped the Goldeyes split a four-game series at Fargo-Moorhead. Carl took a no-decision, striking out a season-high 10 batters over six shutout innings. The Goldeyes came from behind in the top of the ninth to win the game 4-2. The 10 strikeouts were one shy of Carl’s career-high of 11, which he accomplished three times in 2015.
Carl is in his second season with the Winnipeg Goldeyes and is 8-2 with a 2.56 ERA in 12 starts and one relief appearance since joining the club late last year. Carl originally signed with the Kansas City Royals as a non-drafted free agent in 2010 out of the University of New Mexico, and has reached the Double-A level during his six-year professional career.
The Winnipeg Goldeyes open a three-game series against the Texas AirHogs on Tuesday night. First pitch at Shaw Park is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Kyle Anderson (3-1, 2.73) faces AirHogs’ right-hander Matt Shepherd (0-2, 3.86).
